Food

Even the people who don't like fish dishes should try the fish salad or goulash which are cooked from the freshest seafood and emit an aroma of Montenegrin seasonings and spices. If you love a good and hearty stew, turli tava is the dish for you. Another typical Macedonian dish cooked in the traditional earthenware. Turli tava consists of okra, potatoes, eggplant, ground meat, peppers, carrots, rice and onion. Again, this dish is usually served with a side of plain yogurt.

Specialities

Cooked potato – is an easy and favorite meal which is accompanied the cheese and sour cabbage

Thick soups – thick soups in Montenegro are usually prepared with noodles, potatoes or vegetables.

Rastan – a strong meal made of local vegetables from the family of cabbages, it is cooked with white potato and with a lot of spices.

Drink

As a typical southern European country, the Montenegrin landscape is relatively dry, mountainous and definitively Mediterranean. Hence there is a long-established culture of viticulture and winemaking here. The south of Montenegro is characterized by two kinds of grapevine: Vranac and Krstac. Today these are by far the best-known brands. Vranac (black wine), as the red wine is called in the majority of Slav countries, is made of extremely coarse and dark grapes.

Niksic beer is a real trademark of Montenegro with a taste that much bigger producers in the world would envy. It is made of barley, hard mountain water and bitter and aromatic hops. It is usually served cool. You can find it in packages of Nik, Nik Gold, Nik Cool, and Nick dark. Each of them has its own specific taste.

For liquour, Montenegro has rakija, a type of brandy and this is a strong alcoholic drink similar to Russian vodka but stronger and more aromatic.
