Netherlands Geography & Maps

  • Bordered by Belgium and Germany
  • Harbour of Rotterdam

Located in Western Europe, the Netherlands shares borders with Germany in the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea in the north and the west. Although relatively small in size, the Netherlands has a population of approximately 16 million people.

The geography of the country can be divided into two parts: the low and flat lands found in the western and northern parts of the country and then the higher lands. A very flat country, the highest point in the Netherlands is Vaalserberg at 322.7 m (1,059 ft) approximately one-fifth of the Netherlands is below sea level. As such, an extensive range of sea walls and coastal dunes protect the country from the sea. Dikes are situated around the several rivers and canals that crisscross the country to help when they flood.
