Food

Due to its long coastline, seafood heavily influences the cuisine of Portugal. Despite being located on the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean traditions and recipes have played a role in shaping the food culture in Portugal. Dishes in Portugal tend to be simple in nature using regional produce. Fish comes in many varieties and can be grilled, boiled, fried, stewed and roasted. The most common fish that is cooked is cod, and it has been said that there are more than 365 different ways to prepare it! As a result of the country’s former colonies, spice plays a major role in Portuguese cooking. Piri piri, black pepper, cinnamon, vanilla and saffron are staples of many dishes.

Popular dishes include:

Bacalhau à Gomes de Sâ (from Porto): This dish is salted cod that is served with potatoes and onions that are topped with eggs.

Carne de porco à Alentajana: This is pork that has been marinated in wine and is then garnished with clams.

Frango grelhado: This dish consists of grilled chicken that has been seasoned with piri piri, garlic and olive oil.

Feijoada: This is a Portuguese meat stew (beef and pork) that consists of kidney or butter beans.

Arrozdoce: A favourite dessert, it is a lemon and cinnamon flavoured rice pudding.

Drink

The most famous beverage to come from Portugal is port. There are two wine regions in the country that have been protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Pauro Valley and Pico Island. Popular brands of wine include Vinho Verde from Minho in the north and Vinho do Dâo and Vinho da Bairrada.
