Located on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal shares an 800 km (500 mi) coastline with the Atlantic Ocean. Its only other border is with Spain in the north and the east. The islands of Madeira and the Azores, both located in the Atlantic Ocean are part of Portuguese territory.

The Tagus River runs from east to west, essentially dividing the country in two. The mountains of the Iberian Peninsula characterize the area north of the river. The highest point on the mainland is Serra da Estrela which stands at 1,993 m (6,539 ft). However, Pico Alto, located on Pico Island is Portugal’s tallest mountain at 2,351 m (7,713 ft). Wide plains characterize the area south of the river.

Lisbon is Portugal’s largest city and is also its capital. It is the westernmost capital city and Europe, and the only one to be located on the Atlantic Ocean. Lisbon is also one of the oldest cities in the world, predating London, Paris and Rome. Today it is considered a global city and is one of the major economic centres on the continent.
