Romania Geography & Maps
Located halfway between the Equator and the North Pole, Romania is Europe’s 12th largest country. It shares land borders with Hungary to the northwest, Serbia in the southwest, Ukraine in the north, and the Republic of Moldova in the east. Along Romania’s southeast coast is the Black Sea.
The geography of Romania is quite diverse, however, one of the most dominating features is the Carpathian Mountains. These mountains, also known as the Transylvanian Alps, have three major ranges that span 600 mi: the Eastern, Western, and Southern ranges. The Southern range has the highest peaks, Moldoveanu at 2,544 m (8,346 ft) and Negoiu at 2,535 m (8,317 ft).
Lakes are also a large part of Romanian geography. There are approximately 3,500 lakes in the country. The largest lakes are lagoons that are found along the Black Sea Coast. Glacial lakes found in the Carpathian Mountains are small, but they are very impressive. There are more than 150 glacial lakes in the southern range alone.
