The Russian Federation, the largest country in the world by area, covers an area almost twice the size of America. It shares boundaries with fourteen different countries and approximately two-thirds of Russia’s frontier is bounded by water. This water includes an incredible thirteen seas and three oceans, the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Pacific. Containing one-eighth of the Earth’s inhabited land area, from west to east Russia stretches from Kaliningrad to Ratmanov Island and goes north to south, Russia extends from the northern tip of the Russian Arctic Islands to the Republic of Dagestan on the Caspian Sea.
The topography of Russia is divided into the Eastern and West Siberian Plains, the North Siberian lowland and the Kolyma lowland, the Central Siberian Plateau and the Lena Plateau. There are several mountain ranges throughout the country, they include the Ural Mountains, the Sayan and Stanovoy Mountains, and the Caucasus Mountains as well as ranges in the Central Siberian Plateau, Northeast Siberia and the Kamchatka and the West Siberian Plain. At 5,642 km (18,510 ft), Mount Elbrus in the western Caucasus, is the highest point in the country.
