Switzerland is a landlocked country that shares borders with France to the west, Germany in the north, Austria and Liechtenstein in the east and Italy in the south. The geography of Switzerland can be divided into three different regions: the Jura, the Plateau and the Alps.

The Jura is a limestone range that makes up 12% of the surface area of Switzerland. The Jura covers parts of France, but in Switzerland, it lines the border of France spanning the cantons of Basel, Solothurn, Jura, Bern, Neuchâtel, and Vaud. It also covers part of the German border in the canton of Schaffhausen.

The Plateau accounts for 30% of Switzerland’s surface area. It also hosts two-thirds of the population. Partly flat, the majority of this part of the country is hilly with an average height of between 400 and 700 m above sea level. This region stretches from Lake Geneva in the southwest to Lake Constance in the northeast.

The Swiss Alps are an incredibly famous part of Switzerland’s geography. This range has an average altitude of 1,700 m (5,576 ft). There are 48 mountains in this part of the country, the largest of which is Dufourspitze in canton Valais which stands at 4,634 m (15,203 ft).
