As a result of its various climates, Switzerland offers many different plant and animal species.  There is only one official national park in the country, however, there are Biosphere Reserves, and Switzerland has made plans to designate more national parks in the future.

The only national park in the country is aptly named Swiss National Park. Located in the canton of Graubünden in eastern Switzerland, it became a national park in 1914. The largest protected part in the country, the park was also one of the first national parks in Europe. Due to strict restrictions that maintain that visitors must stick only to hiking paths, much of the park’s landscape has remained untouched. These regulations meant that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (ICUN) declared it to be a strict nature reserve.

Aargau Jura Park is a Biosphere Reserve located between the Aare and Rhine rivers in the Swiss canton of Aargau. It was declared a regional nature park of national importance, covering the Aargau Jura Mountains and valley. This park is particularly special because of the panoramic views of the Alps that are available from the park’s vantage point.

Located at the foot of the Alps, Entlebuch Biosphere has named a biosphere by UNESCO in September 2001. The park is home to many important international plant species as well as stunning beauty. Entlebuch includes the Valley of the Little Emme River that is found between Bern and Lucerne.
