The United Kingdom is made up of four distinct countries: Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England.  Northern Ireland occupies 17% of the island of Ireland.  It is divided amongst 6 counties and is crisscrossed by uplands and lowlands.  At 850 m (2,782 ft), Slieve Donard is the highest point in the country.  Northern Ireland also hosts Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in Britain.

Bordered by England, the geography of Wales is varied.  There are flat coastal plains, valleys, farms and ranges of hills and mountains.  The largest mountains are in the north of the country, with Snowdon at 1,085 m (3559.71 ft) being the highest.

Like Wales, Scotland’s only border is with England.  It has an incredibly long coastline that is teeming with exceptional natural beauty.  The highest mountain in Scotland is Ben Nevis at 1,344 m 4409.45 ft).  There are also more than 700 islands in Scotland that extend quite far north.

Mainland England makes up about two-thirds of the British Isles.  There are also several small islands such as the Isle of Wight.  The landscape in England is varied and includes green hills, coastlines, flat lands and much more.  Mountain ranges exist in the north and include the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District as well as the Pennine mountains.
