Belize Geography and Maps
Despite its small size, Belize is part of the Mesoamerican biodiversity hotspot and is home to incredibly varied ecosystems. Located north of the equator and west of the Prime Meridian on the Yucatán Peninsula, Belize shares borders with Mexico to the north-northwest and Guatemala to the south-southwest. Its coastline borders the Caribbean Sea to the east. Interestingly, Belize is the only country in Central America that does not have a Pacific coastline.
The major geographical features of the country include the Belize Barrier Reef, the Maya Mountains and the largest cave system in Central America. The barrier reef is one of the largest in the world and hosts many coral reefs, cays and islands with an abundance of marine life. The Maya Mountains dominate the southern half of the country and are shared with Guatemala. The average height of the mountains is 1,100 m (3608.92 ft) with the highest point, Doyle’s Delight reaching 1,160 m (3805.77 ft). Nestled in the foothills of this mountain range are many ancient Maya ruins.
The Chiquibul Cave System is located in western Belize and covers approximately 540,000 square feet. This incredible sight encompasses a network of four major caves, and while much of the area has been discovered, there are still parts that remain unexplored.
