Bolivia Geography and Maps
One of only two landlocked countries on the continent, Bolivia is bordered by Peru to the northwest, Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay to the southeast, Argentina to the south and Chile to the west. A relatively small country, Bolivia is home to varying landscapes and topography and is considered much more rural than urban. The geography of Bolivia can be broken down into three main areas, the Altiplano, the valleys and the tropical lowlands.
The Altiplano is a high plateau located at approximately 4,000 m (13,000 ft) above sea level. The most dominant and famous feature of the Altiplano is Lake Titicaca, South America’s second-largest lake by area. The lake helps to moderate the climate of the area and helps with the cultivation of crops. Also located within the Altiplano are several salt flats, the most famous being Uyuni which covers some 9,000 square kilometres.
Bolivia’s valleys contain some of the country’s most incredible scenery and are dominated by steep slopes and peaks. There is lush vegetation throughout the valleys and the land is incredibly fertile, but is hard to access. Part of the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland is found in Bolivia. The country’s lowland tropics share borders with Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. In this part of the country, heavy rainfall provides lush flora and a tropical climate.
