Colombia Weather
Colombia’s proximity to the equator means that temperatures vary little throughout the year. Altitude is one of the largest factors that have an impact on the climate of the country. The higher the altitude the greater the difference in temperature occurs. (The general rule is that the temperature falls approximately 6˚ for every 1,000 m (3,280 ft) increase). There are two seasons in Colombia, dry which is considered summer and wet which is considered winter, however the times that these seasons occur depends on the region.
In the capital Bogotá, the temperature rarely falls below 10˚C (50˚F) or gets higher than 20˚C (68˚F). The dry season in Bogotá runs from December to January and again from July to August while the wet season is from April to May and September to November. The Caribbean coast experiences more heat and humidity with less rain (although the wet season is from September to October). Temperatures in places like Cartagena and Santa Maria average between 24-33˚C (75.2-91.4˚F). In the Amazon region, the rainforest naturally experiences a great deal of rainfall annually (the wettest months are January through May) and temperatures in the high twenties with extreme humidity. Finally, in Colombia’s Coffee Region, the majority of the year enjoys temperatures ranging from 17-25˚C (62.6-77˚F) and rainfall is quite consistent.
