  • The large waterfalls of Juayua
  • Stunning fox

While El Salvador’s size means it lacks the amount and variety of species found in other countries, there are still national parks and protected areas found throughout the country that help to highlight the beauty that exists here. In 1997, the government of El Salvador established the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in order to preserve the nation’s landscapes. There are also various non-governmental organizations that work to protect El Salvador’s nature and wildlife. El Salvador’s five national parks are Bosque Conchagua, Parque Nacional El Boquerón, Parque Nacional El Imposible, Parque Nacional de Montecristo and Parque Nacional Cerro Verde.

Bosque Conchagua surrounds the Conchagua Volcano in southeastern El Salvador. This park hosts a coastal forest that provides a habitat for 65 different species of birds. Parque Nacional El Boquerón is situated at the top of the San Salvador Volcano. Animal species like armadillos, raccoons, deer and foxes as well as many plant species inhabit the park, but the main attraction is the volcano’s crater. Parque Nacional El Imposible offers incredibly diverse forests. It earned its name from the difficult terrain that exists in the region and the park is a haven for nature lovers. This forest hosts more than 400 types of trees. There are also 275 bird species, a variety of butterflies and approximately 100 mammal species.

Parque Nacional de Montecristo is located in El Salvador’s mountains that border both Honduras and Guatemala. Covering 1,972 hectares, this protected reserve provides habitats for rare bird species like toucans and striped owls. Lush forests are also found within the park as well as countless orchid species. Finally, Parque Nacional Cerro Verde is 4,500 hectares in size and is made up of both private and public land. Volcán Izalco, El Salvador’s highest volcano is located in the park which also boasts the green hills of Cerro Verde.
