Guatemala Geography and Maps
Located in Central America, Guatemala shares borders with four countries (Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Belize) and has two coastlines, one on the Caribbean Sea and one on the Pacific Ocean. The geography of Guatemala is very much characterized by mountains and forests.
There are two mountain ranges in Guatemala that divide the country into three different regions. The Guatemalan highlands are an upland region found in the southern part of the country. They are made up of a series of high valleys that are enclosed by mountains and all major cities are found here. Volcán Tajumulco at 4,220 m (13,845 ft) is the highest point in the highlands and is also the highest point in Central America.
The second geographical region in Guatemala is the Pacific Coast which is located south of the mountains. This 300 km (186.41 ft) tropical coast is often called La Costa Sur and is characterized by black sand and a dangerous undertow. The final region is the tableland of El Petén which is to the north of the mountains. El Petén covers 36,600 square kilometres (14,131 square miles) of hardwood forest and accounts for approximately one-third of the national territory while only accommodating around 40,000 people.
