Food

Honduras cuisine is considered to be quite similar to that of Mexico but is known for using more coconut than any other Central American country. Dishes tend to rely on spices like cumin, curry, allspice and achiote for flavour and also use lime juice and fresh herbs. Tortillas and refried beans are staples of the Honduran diet and much of the population eat tortillas with every meal. Meat is often a constant in Honduran cuisine with beef being the favourite, however, chicken and pork are also common. With a tropical climate, fresh fruit abounds and Honduras’ two coastlines provide a wealth of fresh seafood including fish, lobsters and conch.  In larger cities, American chain restaurants are also available.

Popular dishes include:

Anafre: This dish is a common appetizer and consists of beans served with tortilla chips and melted cheese and chorizo. It tends to come served in a small clay pot.

Burritas: This dish consists of a flour tortilla that is filled with shredded meat, refried beans, cheese and avocado.

Sopa de caracol: Caracol is Spanish for conch and so essentially this dish is a conch soup.  The conch is cooked in coconut milk and broth and flavoured with spices, yuca, cilantro and green bananas.

Ceviche: Naturally seafood is popular in Honduras and this dish consists of raw fish, shrimp or conch, onions, tomatoes and cilantro which is then marinated in lime juice. Like most dishes, ceviche is served with tortilla chips.

Pastelitos de Carne: This dish is a flour pastry that is filled with meat, rice and sometimes includes potatoes. Once stuffed, the pastry is then deep fried.

Tostones: A popular side dish in Honduras, tostones are crunchy deep-fried plantains.

Drink

With so much fresh fruit available in the country, licuados are a popular drink that consists of a milkshake flavoured with fruits like mangoes, watermelons, bananas and more. It is advisable to avoid tap water in Honduras and to stick to bottled water at all times. Beer is popular in the country and some of the more common brands include Salva Vida, Port Royal, Barena and Imperial. For those brave enough to try something unique and different, Giffy is a Garifuna liquor that is quite fiery and strong.
