Peru Geography and Maps

Located on the Pacific Coast of the South American continent, Peru borders Ecuador and Colombia in the north, Brazil and Bolivia in the east, and Chile in the south. The third largest country in South America, the geography and landscapes of Peru are varied and can be divided into three natural zones: the coast, the highlands and the jungle.

Peru’s coastline is narrow and stretches for 2,414 km (1,500 mi) along the western part of the country and contains Lima, the capital city as well as other major cities. Characterised by patches of the desert as well as mangrove swamps and dry forests, at its southern end, the coastal region merges into the Atacama Desert. Peru’s highland region is made up of the Andes, the second highest mountain chain in the world. Standing at 6,768 m (22,200 ft) Huascarán is the tallest mountain in the country and is the sixth highest in the Americas. While the Andes are tropical, some of the mountain peaks have permanent glaciers. The eastern side of the Andes receives more rain than the western side and as such, there are cloud forests as well as tropical foothills that lead into the Amazon basin.

Approximately 60% of Peru’s land is in the Amazon basin which stretches down the eastern side of the country. Characterized by many rivers including the Amazon, the Maranon and Ucayali rivers, the Amazon is an incredibly rich and diverse tropical forest. Peru hosts the second largest portion of the Amazon rainforest after Brazil. It is interesting to note that despite the size of this region, only about 5% of the population lives here.
