Venezuela Geography and Maps
Located on the northern coast of South America, Venezuela is bordered by three countries and two bodies of water. The Caribbean Sea is in the north while Guyana and the Atlantic Ocean border the east. Brazil is located to the south of Venezuela and Colombia is in the west and southwest. There are four distinct geographical regions within the country: the Venezuelan Highlands, the Maracaibo lowlands, the Orinoco plains and the Guiana region.
The Venezuelan Highlands are mountains that border the Caribbean Sea. This range is the northeasternmost extension of the Andes Mountain chain. At 4,978 m (16,332 ft) Pico Bolívar is the highest point in the country with a top that is permanently covered in snow. The valleys found between the mountains are where a great deal of the population of Venezuela live. The Maracaibo lowlands are surrounded by mountains on three sides and are quite flat. Lake Maracaibo dominates the area which is known for its oil fields.
The Orinoco plains, commonly known as Los Ilanos, are lowlands with elevations that never exceed 200 m (656 ft). The Orinoco river is a well-known feature of the area and is the most important river in Venezuela. Finally, the Guiana region, which consists of plateaus, makes up over half of the country. The Gran Sabana is found in this region and is a savanna with incredibly unique geography including Angel Falls, the highest waterfalls in the world.
