Lemala Migration Safari: Tarangire, Ngorongoro & The Serengeti

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 7,727

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: Witnessing Tanzania's great migration is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A natural phenomenon where over a million wildebeests and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles migrate north annually.

We normally discourage travellers from following the herd, but Tanzania is the exception on this African safari. Spend 7 days in the home of the great Serengeti migration, exploring Africa’s most famous national park, as well as Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.

Ernest Hemmingway called Lake Manyara the ‘loveliest lake in Africa’ (sorry Victoria!). The surrounding National Park is famed for its baboons, and is an excellent spot to see hippos, giraffes, elephants and tree climbing lions. 2 nights here with a morning and afternoon game drive will give you the best chance of seeing these beautiful creatures.

The world’s largest open, inactive volcanic crater, Ngorongoro is one of Africa’s finest wildlife conservation areas and home to over 25,000 large animals including lions, zebra wildebeest and gazelles. It is also one of your best opportunities to see black rhinos, the rarest of the Big 5.

Serengeti National Park is the crown jewel of Tanzania, known for its annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Other animals include the Big 5 (more then 3,000 lions and 1,000 leopards call the Serengeti home), cheetahs, hyenas, baboons, African wild dogs and giraffes. Bird watchers should also keep their eyes peeled for over 500 species that inhabit the plains.

This itinerary takes in an extra two nights at Lemala Kuria in the Northern Serengeti.

Day 5

Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, drive to the Serengeti National Park, undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere. Arrive for lunch at your lodge and later this afternoon you will have a game drive until sunset. Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th worldwide wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest's trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant's gazelle.

The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania's greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat. This evening you will enjoy a sundowner at the Mukoma Hills.

Day 6

Serengeti National Park

A full day is spent in the Serengeti with a picnic lunch. There is more to Serengeti than large mammals. Gaudy agama lizards and rock hyraxes scuffle around the surfaces of the park's isolated granite koppies. A full 100 varieties of dung beetle have been recorded, as have 500- plus bird species, ranging from the outsized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird of the open grassland, to the black eagles that soar effortlessly above the Lobo Hills. As enduring as the game-viewing is the liberating sense of space that characterizes the Serengeti Plains, stretching across sunburnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth. Yet, after the rains, this golden expanse of grass is transformed into an endless green carpet flecked with wildflowers. And there are also wooded hills and towering termite mounds, rivers lined with fig trees and acacia woodland stained orange by dust. Popular the Serengeti might be, but it remains so vast that you may be the only human audience when a pride of lions masterminds a siege, focused unswervingly on its next meal.
