Hanoi: Life on the Railway Tracks Half Day Tour

Duration
3 Hours

  • Get a feel for local life on your Vietnam vacation

This excursion focuses on life on and around Hanoi's urban railway tracks and provides the opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily life of Hanoians who live and work along the city's main railway line. The tour navigates the narrow streets of the old town which are dissected by Hanoi's main railway artery. Accustomed to the deafening noise of the passing trains, the locals go about their daily chores - cooking, cleaning and raising their families - almost oblivious to the slow moving trains.

Your 40-minute stroll begins at Cua Nam Street and provides opportunities to communicate with local residents and capture some unique moments of local life until we reach the historical Long Bien Bridge, built at the beginning of the 20th century. This huge steel structure witnessed the withdrawal of French troops from Hanoi and welcomed Vietnamese soldiers liberating the capital in 1954. It was also severely damaged by bombardments during the Vietnam War due to its strategic position (the only bridge at that time across the Red River and connecting Hanoi to other provinces, particularly the crucial port in Hai Phong city).

You will also see the ageing Long Bien railway station and enjoy a bit of interaction with local street vendors before sitting to enjoy a cold soft drink - or even a local beer!
