Day 1

Arrive Tokyo

Tokyo is a city of contrasts. This front-line capital famous for its pioneering modernity, iconic landscapes of neon and soaring skyscrapers is dotted with peaceful parklands, shrines, temples and adored gardens. Despite its mania for anime pop culture, fashion, digital trends and discernible consumption, the city embraces an ancient heritage evident in the temples and shrines scattered amongst the vast skyrises. The Imperial Palace provides a palpable link to the city's incredible heritage even with the explosion of commercial emporia. Free from the shopping and entertainment districts, historic wooden house, private bonsai gardens and the calming Zen atmosphere of the Hamarikyu Gardens thrive to allow visitors an escape from the hyperactivity of the lively streets. Even with the city's costly reputation visitors can take advantage of the inexpensive izakaya bars and neighbourhood cafes serving delectable noodle and rice dishes. In fact, many of Tokyo's charms can be enjoyed free of charge; stroll through Asakusa and the Buddhist temple Sensoji, the fashion Mecca of Harajuku, the world's largest fish market at Tsukiji, or the neon-imbued atmosphere of Shinjuku and be enveloped by Japan's largest city.

On your arrival at Narita Airport, our assistant will meet you in the lobby with a Pasmo Card (supercharged so that you can use it for sightseeing and travel at your leisure) as well as a ticket for the airport limousine bus to your hotel. The airport limousine bus will take you directly to the door of your hotel. Upon arrival at your hotel, the rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 5

This evening you may choose from two evening tours.

Discover Sake with an Expert

Meet Chris, a British expat who is an expert on Japanese sake and has over 10 years experience in the sake industry. He first came to Japan in 2014 to learn more about Japan's native alcohol and has since spent time visiting close to 100 breweries. Since 2017 he has been a licensed WSET Educator as well as a certified international sake sommelier.

Please make your own way to a local restaurant in Ueno this evening for various cups of sake as well as some perfectly paired tapas-style Japanese bites.

Chris will give you an easy-to-understand overview of sake's history, its culture, how it is made and most importantly, the best way to enjoy it. Despite all sake being made from the same basic ingredients, each brewery has their own secrets, technique and flavour. Tonight, you will experience the range that sake has to offer. You will have the chance to try it at different temperatures and will try drinking it from different cups. The food pairings will be tailored to perfectly compliment the delicate scents and flavours of the sake.

Up to six cups of sake and paired light bites are included this evening. If you wish to order additional food and drinks, you will need to pay for these yourself on the day. Chris will have to leave you after a couple of hours, but if you would like you are welcome to stay at the restaurant and make your own way home later.

Evening Tokyo Depachika and Yakitori Alley Tour

With a private guide, set out to the Mitsukoshi department store, one of Tokyo's oldest, whose basement food floor is something to behold. Follow the smoke and steam that's looping its way up from under the railway tracks to "Yakitori Alley", a warren of rickety outdoor yakitori stands. Each open-air corner is tended by its own chef who knows everything you'd ever need to about the fine art of grilling chicken. At one of the many restaurants, you can stop for a cold drink and a yakitori (grilled chicken skewer).

Your guide will leave you at the restaurant to continue enjoying good food and you will need to make your own way home after the tour ends.
