Explore Melbourne & the Great Ocean Road with Air Canada

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,099

From adorable penguins to wineries, to the Great Ocean Road and beyond, explore Victoria’s past and present on this ultimate road trip from Melbourne. Nature, history, and good living come together to make Australia’s southernmost mainland state an unforgettable destination.

This 12-day, air-inclusive, self-drive trip to Victoria invites you to see why Melbourne is one of the world’s most liveable cities, how the Southern Ocean shapes Australia’s most dynamic coastline, and the gold rush history that once made Victoria the world’s richest colony.

Fly with Air Canada to Melbourne, where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel, settling in for four nights exploring this seven-time ‘the world’s most liveable city.’ Embark on a sightseeing tour to get acquainted with Melbourne’s favourite landmarks and gardens. In the afternoon, you’ll be taken to Phillip Island to see its cutest nightly ritual. The Little Penguin Parade brings thousands of the birds ashore each night as they return from the Southern Ocean, waddling their way up to their burrows. This day also includes a visit to a Koala Conservation Centre, and Warrook Homestead, where you can see wild kangaroos.

Melburnians love their wine, and as you spend your second excursion day tasting at four premium wineries in the Yarra Valley, with lunch included, you’ll come to understand why. Then it’s time to enjoy a day in Melbourne on your own. You might zip to Eureka Skydeck for unbeatable city views, bask in Melbourne’s love for all things cultural at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Melbourne Museum, or the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, indulge your bohemian impulses in funky Fitzroy, or join an Aboriginal guide for a journey into the region’s Indigenous past. Just be sure to break long enough for a flat white or brunch in one of Melbourne’s famous laneways, and to take in the local street art. Melbourne might be fabulous, but also likes to keep things down to earth.

Pick up your rental vehicle and begin your journey along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, one of the most spectacular drives in Australia. Head west, spending your first night at the seaside town of Apollo Bay. Travel through Otway National Park, exploring some of Australia’s oldest and most beautiful forests. Your next destination is Port Campbell National Park, home to the famed Twelve Apostles. Each once a part of the slowly receding mainland, these stone sentinels rise from the churning waters of the Southern Ocean. You can also visit Loch Ard Gorge, the beautiful stone formation named for the ill-fated ship that wrecked here in 1878. Spend the night in the historic fishing village of Port Fairy before turning inland.

The Grampians National Park is one of Victoria’s great natural treasures. Steeped in Aboriginal culture dating back thousands of years, the park seems to offer hidden waterfalls, views, valleys, and natural secrets around every corner. For one final surprise, the surrounding region also supports several of Australia’s top winemakers. Your next stop is the gold mining town of Ballarat, where you’ll visit Sovereign hill, a faithful recreation of an 1850s gold mining town.

Take some time to enjoy Ballarat before driving back to Melbourne for one last night. Then catch your return flight to North America, or consider adding a few days onto your stay.

A newer development is the restored Docklands where one can enjoy award-winning restaurants and stylish bars and cafes. For something different, head to St. Kilda’s or Fitzroy, colourful neighbourhoods with characters of their own. St. Kilda’s has its own beachfront and is home to Luna Park, the renowned amusement park.
