South Australian Wildlife and Wine

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 2,669

A South Australia vacation takes the route not travelled by most trips to Australia. Less crowded but no less satisfying, enjoy the Festival State’s world renowned wines, and marvel at the natural treasure trove that is Kangaroo Island, a haven for a wide variety of Australian and Southern Ocean wildlife.

This 7-day Australia trip departs Adelaide, the undersung capital of South Australia, before taking you to the Barossa Valley and Kangaroo Island.

Adelaide is renowned as one of Australia’s cultural capitals, on par with Melbourne or Sydney. Spend a full day exploring the city’s blend of historic buildings, immaculately designed parks, and Botanic Gardens. Visit the National Wine Centre to learn about South Australia’s most beloved export, and take a tour through the Haigh’s Chocolate Factory to try a worthy runner up! You can also opt to embark on the Adelaide Central Market Discovery Tour to see, hear, smell, and taste why this is the most delicious city in Australia. After dark, perhaps visit an atmospheric wine or cocktail bar in the rejuvenated CBD.

After your brief introduction, it’s time to explore the business (or, let’s be honest, pleasure) hub of South Australia’s wine industry in the Barossa Valley. An orientation tour takes you through the region’s most magnificent scenery, stopping in at a traditional Aussie… or rather, German bakery for pastries. Long settled by German immigrants, the Barossa retains many German touches today, including the picturesque town of Tanunda. You will of course enjoy several tastings at some of the region’s best loved wineries, as well as an alfresco lunch at Vintners restaurant. There’s a lot to see, so this itinerary gives you a full day at leisure after your tour to pick up any sights that interest you.

Transfer to Kangaroo Island, occasionally known as Australia’s Galapagos for its impressive variety of wildlife, including its famous sea lions. Before visiting them, you’ll stop by Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery for a tour. Upon reaching the park, a National Park Ranger guides you among a breeding colony of sea lions, before you take in a Birds of Prey show. Your final wildlife destination is Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, where you can see Koalas, Penguins, Kangaroos, Wallabies, and other species up close. Your second day on the island takes you to a honey farm, and Flinders Chase National Park, which boasts some of the most impressive geological formations in Australia such as Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Keep an eye out for more seals before boarding the ferry back to Adelaide for one final night before your flight home.
