Peru's Pre-Incan Past: Trujillo, Gocta, Kuelap & More

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 6,182

DELUXE | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Venture into Peru’s north to discover pre-Incan ruins and natural wonders. Connecting from Lima to Trujillo, you’ll see pre-Incan pyramids, hike to Gocta Falls, the third-tallest waterfall in the world, explore the citadel fortress of Kuelap, visit the cemetery town of Revash, and see mummies and burial relics at the Leymebamba Museum.

This 10-day Peruvian vacation takes you beyond the tourist trail with visits to ancient archaeological sites and natural landmarks, including the Pachacamac Temples, Chan Chan, Gocta Falls, Kuelap Fortress, and the Revash Tombs. It features first-class accommodations and private tours.

Your trip to Peru begins in Lima, the capital, where you’ll get your bearings and enjoy your first taste of Peruvian culture. Using Lima as your base camp, you’ll head southeast to the pre-Incan temples of Pachacamac. Survey ruins of temples and pyramids dating back to 200 AD and learn about the history of a people that defined the coastline before the emergence of the Incas and European contact. Back in Lima, get a taste for Peru’s celebrated fusion cuisine at Cala Restaurant.

Connect northwest to Trujillo, where you’ll be based as you explore nearby archaeological ruins. Start at Chan Chan, the former capital of the Chimu Empire, who fell to the Incas in the 15th-century. At one point, it was possibly the largest city in pre-Columbian South America. The next day, head to the Huaja Rajada complex, known for its massive pyramids, before you explore the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, where you’ll see a golden reconstruction of the tomb known as the South America equivalent to King Tutankhamen’s tomb.

Continue your journey off the “Gringo Trail” by heading into the rainforest near Cocachamba. Trek 11km (return included) through the Andean Cloud Forest to reach Gocta Falls, which stands 771m tall and is the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world after Angel Falls and Victoria Falls. Soak in the views as well as the refreshing feeling of spray and fresh air hitting your face when you break through the rainforest at the base of the falls. Continue the adventure to Kuelap Fortress, one of the oldest stone monuments in the Americas. This fortress built by the Chachapoyas all but disappeared from history until being rediscovered in 1843. Ride the cable car up to its massive stone walls and survey the citadel fortress, marvelling at the remarkable preservation of the ruins.

Cap off your journey to Peru’s pre-Incan archaeological sites at Revash, a cemetery town near Santo Tomas. The hut-like construction and red and white paint of the tombs makes them seem like buildings huddled along the cliffs. Explore the town and its tomb villages before you visit the Leymebamba Museum, which offers insight into pre-Inca cultures, as well as a collection of artifacts saved from plunder, including over 200 mummies.

At the end of your stay, head to the airport for onward travels.

Day 2

Half Day Pachacamac Temples

You will be picked up from your hotel in Lima and taken in on a sightseeing tour of the Pachacamac Temple.

Pre-Hispanic mythology and Wari legend will weave their magic around you as you explore the ruins of Pachacamac, Peru’s most renowned pre-Hispanic pilgrimage site. According to Wari legend, Pachacamac was the God of 'fire and earthquakes'. These temple ruins lie just 30 kilometres south of Lima, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Although the earliest constructions at Pachacamac only date back to around 200 A.D., it is famed as the site of an important Inca Temple, the Temple of the Sun and the 'House of the Chosen Women'.3

As you tread the paths of an ancient people, the magic and timelessness of the ruins will give you a sense of Peru's dynamic past.

From the Pre-Inca constructions stand out the "Templo Pintado" (Coloured Temple) and the "Templo Viejo" (Old Temple), built with small adobes and pyramids with ramps. After the Inca conquest, the "Templo del Inti" (Temple of Sun) was built next to them, with a flight of stairs made of stones and passages that go along the edge of the main structure, built with adobes.

Wander around these fascinating ruins and enjoy stunning views of the coast. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Lima.

Day 7

Gocta Falls Trek

The walk to the base of the falls begins at Cocachamba, the small town where the Gocta Lodge is located. It is here where you register for your trek and where you begin the 11km return trek to the base of the world's 3rd tallest waterfalls, after Angel Falls in Venezuela - the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall, with a height of 979 meters (3212 feet) and Victoria Falls - 885 meters (2900 feet) in Zimbabwe: Gocta Falls at 771 meters (2529 feet).

At 5.5km each way, the distance is not challenging but being in the Andean Cloud Forest at about 1200 meters (3937 feet), the temperature is surprisingly humid and that, combined with some extreme up and down tracks, makes the trek an achievable but challenging one.

The effort is well worth it! As you round a corner and come out of the cloud forest to stand the base of Gocta you are face to face with water plummeting from the secondary section of the falls. The water falling, displaces the air and after the humid trek you are met with a fresh spray of water blasted from the falls. For those that want to walk that little bit more, you can continue to the pool formed by the falling water but, be warned you will get very wet this close to the base of the falls.

Day 8

Kuelap Fortress Visit

Kuelap Fortress, atop a mountain plateau and removed from all around it, was forgotten by the modern world until in 1843 when Juan Crisostomo Nieto rediscovered the site. Quickly it became an object for explorers, historians and archaeologists. Since then word has spread and more and more people have been enchanted by its mystical history and beautiful surroundings.

Built by the Chachapoyas, the fortified citadel of Kuelap was home to the Warriors of the Cloud in Peru, before they were conquered by invaders. Massive stone walls and hundreds of ruins stand as a reminder of a formidable culture lost to history. The purported site at which the Inca King Huayna Capac, was poisoned and killed, leading to the civil war that wracked the empire just before the Spanish Conquistadores landed, Kuelap is at the cross roads of ancient and modern Peruvian history.

Kuelap is one of the largest ancient stone monuments in the New World, and is located 3,000 meters (approximately 10,000 feet) above sea level on the slope of the Andes in northern Peru. Getting to the peak is easy as you take the newly built, and highly exhilarating cable car ride to the summit. For those wishing to escape the "gringo trail" of southern Peru and explore a region few have visited a visit to Kuelap - "father to Machu Picchu ruins" - is a moderate physical undertaking but highly rewarding.

Day 9

Leymebamba Museum and Revash Day Tour

Revash is a collection of tombs near the town of Santo Tomas. The tombs look like houses and are set alongside the ledges of limestone cliffs. The tombs of Revash are built from mud-set stones and are painted in red and white hues. The buildings look like small houses and seem to form mini villages along the face of the cliff. A winding road up and into the Andes take you to a small town from where you begin a short 3k, trek to the ruins. It is an easy walk with a few up and downs.

Opened in June 2000, the Museo Leymebamba displays the more than 200 mummies and their burial offerings recovered in 1997 from the near-by Laguna de los Condores. Once at risk from looters and vandals, today this valuable collection is housed in the Museo Leymebamba. An initiative of The Bioanthropology Foundation Peru-Centro Mallqui, the Museo Leymebamba's construction was made possible by a donation from a group of Austrian citizens as well as by funds from private donors.

Literally built by hand, by the people of Leymebamba, the museum is an amazing insight into the pre Incan cultures that predominated what is modern day Peru and in particular the burial offerings indicateof the Chachapoya (ca. AD 800-1470), Chachapoya-Inca (ca. 1470-1532) and early Colonial (ca. 1532-1570) times.

In addition to the three museum halls dedicated to the archaeological finds from the Laguna de los Condores, an ethnographic hall presents the varied lifestyles of the region's modern inhabitants, and a fifth hall is designed to host cultural and scientific activities.
