Art Cities of Italy: Venice, Florence and Rome

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 4,526

MODERATE | TAILOR-MADE: Explore the Italian classics with this tour to three of the nation’s most popular art cities. Journey to Venice, Florence, and Rome to gaze upon artistic masterpieces, explore the treasures of the Vatican, and delight in the romantic atmosphere.

This 10-day Italian vacation takes you to Italy’s three most popular cities: Venice, Florence, and Rome. It features moderate accommodations and small group tours.

Your trip to Italy begins in Venice, the city of canals that used to be one of the world capitals of commerce and culture. Get acquainted with this gorgeous medieval city with a tour of one of its central landmarks, St. Mark’s Basilica, which unites St. Mark’s Square with its golden dome and Byzantine architecture. Another day, learn about the Venetian art of glass blowing with a visit to a glass factory in Murano. You’ll see a live glass-blowing demonstration and enjoy a picturesque cruise along the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and the Public Gardens along the way.

From Venice, ride the train to Florence, Italy’s treasure trove of art. Florence has long been the country’s artistic capital. A VIP tour of the famous Duomo will unlock the secrets of the city’s most famous landmark and get you into the mind of Brunelleschi, who designed the iconic cupola. That afternoon, hop over to the Uffizi Gallery to see some of the world’s greatest artistic masterpieces, including Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “The Annunciation.” While in Florence, you’ll also get to see a romantic side of the city with a sunset VIP boat tour along the Arno River. Gently cruise down the river with a drink in hand and enjoy the view of the city’s masterful Renaissance architecture.

Continue on to Rome, the nation’s capital and the beating heart of the ancient Roman Empire. It’s impossible to be anything but dazzled by all that Rome has to offer. On your first full day, beat the crowds with an early entrance to the Vatican Museums and gaze upon Michelangelo’s heavenly frescoes in the Sistine Chapel without having to jockey for space. Then enjoy an intimate tour of the rest of the museum to see other masterworks like Raphael’s frescoes. Cap off the tour with a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest church and the resting place of St. Peter the Apostle. That evening, discover the romantic landmarks of Rome from the Spanish Steps to the Pantheon on an evening tour. You’ll have another day in Rome to see other landmarks you missed, such as the wonders of Ancient Rome centered on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hil.

At the end of your stay, connect to the airport to head back home.

Rialto, Market and Merchants

From Campo San Bartolomeo (St Bartholemew's Square) we walk to the ancient houses of the Corte del Milion. The Malibran Theatre stands were archaeologists think was the house of Marco Polo. Then we cross the Rialto Bridge to visit the commercial heart of Venice: the Banco Giro (which has given its name, the 'giro', to a particular sort of cheque in Britain), the old church of San Giacometto and the leaning facades of Palazzo dei Camerlenghi. Al last we will mingle with the crowd of Venetians shopping in the lively fruit and vegetable and fish market of the Rialto. The colours of the fruit, the variety of the fish from the Adriatic and the fragrance from a florist shop stuck amongst the stalls make the visit something not to be missed; the sight of what was, and still is, the very heart of the city. The tour might end in the Campo Santa Sofia, after crossing the Grand Canal with the traditional Gondola ferry.

Duomo Sky Walk in Florence

On this tour, you will discover the Florence Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral) with its Crypt of Santa Reparata and see the city from an exclusive and breathtaking point of view: the Duomo terraces and Brunelleschi's magnificent dome. Entering with a skip-the-line ticket, with a knowledgeable and passionate guide, the focus will be on the Florence Duomo: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, which is also often considered the symbol of the city. Your guide will explain various styles of the building including masterpieces such as Paolo Uccello's clock, Vasari's frescoes, and Bandinelli's marble choir. Then, begin your ascent to Florence Heaven: the staircase climb, through narrow and open-air corridors that have been closed to the public for centuries. Soon, you will reach the rooftop of the cathedral, with a view of the city from the Duomo Terraces. This unique experience will make you feel like floating between the city landscape, with its ancient roofs and towers, and the imposing Dome standing just a few meters above your head. This is an exclusive visit to the Terraces, which are normally not open to the public. Take the most incredible pictures from this 32-meter-high (105 ft) panoramic point right in the middle of the old town. Learn how the massive self-standing cathedral dome was built and how it can still firmly dominate the Florence skyline after 600 years, withstanding earthquakes and the passage of time. With his astonishingly innovative approach in vaulting the dome space without any scaffolding, Brunelleschi changed the rules of architecture forever, by inventing a way to defy gravity and reach eternity. Then, if you feel like continuing your climb, you can reach the top of Brunelleschi's Cupola (the Dome). Skipping the endless long lines, you will have the opportunity to reach the 91-meter-high (300 ft) panoramic viewpoint for the highest level of this Florentine Heaven and breathtaking views.

Day 6

VIP Sunset Boat Tour with Aperitif on Arno

The most charming experience in Florence. The most unique perspective on the city. The tour that even Florentines fall in love with. A small-group romantic and relaxed boat ride followed by an exclusive aperitivo. An old Italian song goes "on the silvery Arno river the stars look at themselves, reflecting as in a mirror". The Arno river is the history of Florence. It was its first supply source. It first divided the city. It then united it through marvelous Middle Ages and Renaissance bridges. Its riverbanks house some of the most beautiful ancient noble palaces. Nowadays it perfectly reflects the romantic, elegant, slow flowing soul of Florence. This small-group tour will let you discover this soul in the most picture-perfect moment of the day: at aperitivo time, right before dinner, right before sunset, where Florence is flooded by the most magic light, and even the cold stones seem soft and warm, with an enchanting yellow finish that distinguishes the city. Meet your guide and then enjoy a nice short walk through Piazza Signoria and under the Uffizi Gallery, seeing the Pontevecchio (old bridge) from the bank, all the way through to the "embarcadero". Get aboard the "barchetto", the Florenctine Gondola, one of the very few traditional wooden boats left in Florence, conducted by a "barcaiolo", a true florentine tradition holder that will guide the boat with his long-reaching pole. No noisy engines, only the charm of tradition and the voice of your expert guide to unveil the secrets of the Arno river, as you stroll on its calm waters, pass under the magnificent florentine bridges and discover its history and the beautiful Palazzos that frame its ancient riverbed. You will then enjoy a refreshing "aperitivo" with a glass of cool wine, to celebrate on board your romantic stay in Florence!
