What is a Classic Independent Itinerary? SEE Goway Classic BELOW

This 9-day trip through Southern Italy divides its time between Rome and Sorrento, taking in ancient ruins, a cookery class, and the Isle of Capri along the way.

Arrive in Rome and take a two hour morning tour to see the most famous sights. Start from the Spanish Steps, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, pay your respects to gods gone by at the Pantheon, and visit the Piazza Navona. Your afternoon is all about the Vatican and its splendid museums, housing over 65,000 works of art. You’ll also admire the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica of St Peter.

The following day, make your own work of art in the kitchen, learning to prepare some traditional Italian dishes specific to Rome and the Lazio region. Local wines will compliment your creations as you enjoy them. Your last full day in Rome includes a hop-on, hop-off bus pass, so you can pick up the remaining sights at your leisure. You’ll recognise some from your previous tour, but also have the opportunity to visit the Colosseum, Marcello’s Theatre, Circo Massimo, and others. The tour includes commentary in eight different languages.

On to Sorrento, where your seaside accommodation is ideally located for visiting the Isle of Capri. Life seems to slow down here, making it the perfect place to recover from the frenetic pace of Rome. Warm hospitality and an unchanged way of life are defining features of Capri. Discover them while exploring the villages and natural sights.

The name Pompeii has passed into legend. Synonymous with tragedy, it leaves behind a fascinating ruins site at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Explore the houses, theatres and other structures of the doomed city before taking a guided tour of the culprit’s summit, which offers you sweeping views over the Bay of Naples. Pompeii wasn’t the only victim of Vesuvius’ temper. Also destroyed, though better preserved, is Herculaneum, the site of your last day trip. Protected under a layer of tuffaceous material, many aspects of daily life have been preserved in detail, including baths, a sports ground, swimming pools and more.

Return to Naples airport or train station for your departure.

Departing from the Spanish Steps, dominated by the church of Trinita dei Monti, proceed to the Rococo splendor of the Trevi Fountain. Admire the fantasy creatures designed to embody movement. Your guide will explain how, according to tradition, if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain you will eventually return to Rome. Toss in a penny and cross your fingers! Continue to the Pantheon (Temple of all The Gods), originally built to honor the 7 deities of Ancient Rome. Featuring the largest brick dome in the history of architecture, the Pantheon is considered a forerunner of all modern places of worship, and is the most copied of all classical buildings. Next stop is the Piazza Navona, built on the ruins of the Domitian Circus, and now adorned by Bernini's Fountain of the 4 Rivers. Today lunch is included at a typical Italian restaurant. Next it is time to skip the long lines at the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Your tour starts from the Vatican Museum, which houses the most important collection of ancient art in the world including about 1,400 rooms and over 65,000 works of art. The guide will take you to the best galleries to see the frescoes, statues, tapestries and historical maps by masters such as Botticelli, Perugino and Pinturicchio. You will also visit the magnificent Sistine Chapel to admire Michelangelo's ceiling and Last Judgement. As well as celebrated works by other famous painters including Botticelli and Ghirlandaio.
