Explore the highlights of Spain and the Mediterranean on this city and cruise combo. You’ll begin in Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona to experience the vibrancy of Spain before boarding a cruise ship and visiting Mediterranean highlights, from Naples and Rome to Florence and Cannes.

This 17-day Spain vacation includes visits to Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona as well as a cruise across the Mediterranean, stopping off at Naples, Rome, Florence, and Cannes.

Your European vacation begins in Madrid, the Spanish capital and one of the few cities in the world that truly deserves the label “vibrant.” In the past the city was home to royalty and artists, and today it remains home to some of the best nightclubs, bars, and restaurants the world over. On your first day, follow your fancy by taking advantage of the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour to zip around to the most popular spots in the city, including the massive Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza de Cibeles, with its gorgeous Neo-Classical style. The next day, join a guided tour to the sights you missed, starting at Plaza de Oriente and heading to Retiro Park and the Bullring, Plaza de Colon, and ending at the Prado Museum, where you can marvel at masterworks by Goya, Bosch, El Greco, and Velazquez.

From Madrid continue to Seville, the capital of the Andalusia region in the country’s southwest. Known as the birthplace of flamenco, Seville remains one of the country’s cultural capitals. You’ll find three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the Old Town alone, including the Gothic Seville Cathedral, where explorer Christopher Columbus is buried. On a sightseeing tour, you’ll visit icons on and off the beaten track, including the University, Plaza de Espana, and the Jewish Quarter, Santa Cruz. You’ll also visit the Bullring and cross the oldest bridge in the city, Triana Bridge, designed by Gustav Eiffel of Parisian fame.

Close out the Spanish portion of your Mediterranean vacation by heading to Barcelona, the heart of Catalonia and Spain’s artistic capital. Take advantage of the Hop-On Hop-Off tour to move between the popular sites including Gaudi’s La Sagrada Famlia and the shopping boulevard of Passeig de Gracia. Be sure to feast on some world-famous cuisine while in the city and revel in the unmatched artistry in its streets. While in Barcelona, you’ll also take a half-day trip to Montserrat Mountain, where you’ll see the Royal Basilica, where the famous 13th-century sculpture, the Moreneta Virgin or Black Virgin, resides.

In Barcelona, you’ll board the Norwegian Epic, a state-of-the-art cruise liner that’s famous for its on-board Broadway shows and incredible number of dining options. Aboard the Norwegian Epic, set sail for Naples, the treasure of the Amalfi Coast. In Naples, you’ll explore the Piazza del Plebiscito, investigate its castles and caverns, and enjoy a Neapolitan pizza in the city that invented it. You’ll also have the option of heading to nearby Pompeii to explore an ancient city that was destroyed in 79AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted. Head north along the coast to Rome, the Italian capital and heart of the Roman Empire. Spend a day getting a taste of the many historical wonders to be found in the city, focusing on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, and adding in the Vatican City with its treasures of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel if you have time.

From Rome, continue your Italy vacation by heading to Florence, the heart of Tuscany and the country’s figurative treasure trove of art. Head to the Uffizi Gallery to marvel at masterworks by Botticelli and da Vinci, including “The Birth of Venus.” Then zip over to the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s “David,” the most famous statue in the world. In between all the art, make sure to feast on the bright flavours of Tuscany and sip some incredible wine. Later in the day, pass on to Pisa, home to the famous Leaning Tower, which remains one of the most beloved buildings on the planet, despite being an architectural blunder in its own time.

You’ll close out your Mediterranean vacation with a visit to the French coastline, stopping in Cannes, that jewel of the French Riviera that attracts the world’s greatest filmmakers and movie stars for the Cannes Film Festival each May. Even though you’ll miss the festival, you’ll still get to walk down the palm-lined Promenade de la Croisette and hike up Suquet Hill to enjoy gorgeous views of the city and sea. You’ll then make one last stop at Palma on the island of Majorca, where Romans founded a city over 2,100 years ago. Stroll through its narrow cobblestoned streets and visit the Gothic Cathedral before taking advantage of the many restaurants, shops, and art galleries. You’ll then return to Barcelona to disembark and catch your flight home.

The building that today houses the Museo Nacional del Prado was designed by architect Juan de Villanueva in 1785. It was constructed to house the Natural History Cabinet, by orders of King Charles III. The Museo Nacional del Prado, opened to the public for the first time in November 1819. The Museum's first catalogue, published in 1819, included 311 paintings, although at that time its collection comprised just over 1,510 pictures from the various Reales Sitios (Royal Residences). The exceptionally important royal collection, which represents the foundation of the Museum's collection as we know it today, started to increase significantly in the 16th century during the time of Charles V and continued to thrive under the succeeding Habsburg and Bourbon Monarchs. It is down to them than nowadays we can contemplate in the Museum as greatest masterpieces as The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch, The Nobleman with his hand on his Chest by El Greco, Las Meninas by Velazquez and The Family of Carlos IV by Goya.

Montserrat - Half Day Tour

Montserrat is a rocky mountain located 50 km to the southwest of Barcelona. It is considered the most significant and important mountain of Catalonia. The etymology of Montserrat comes from Catalan Mont (mountain) and serrat (serrated). The mountain receives its name for its peculiar morphology. In 1987 Montserrat was declared a Natural Park to ensure its conservation. The highest peak is called Sant Jeroni (Saint Jerome) and stands at 1,236 meters above sea level.
The importance of this mountain is due to the legend of the miraculous appearance of the Madonna and Child in one of the caves. This cave received the name Santa Cova (The Saint Cave). To this day the wood carving of the Madonna and Child are kept in the Church of the monastery and it is possible to visit it. This image of the Madonna is popularly known as La Moreneta (The Black Madonna) for its dark color. The color is the result of a reaction caused by varnish. La Moreneta's holiday is on April 27th.
Due to the legend of the Madonna, the mountain has been linked with spirituality. Besides the main monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, there is a great number of small churches and chapels, some of them abandoned. The main monastery stands at 720 meters above sea level. Nowadays there is a community of 80 monks that live there and follow the rule of Saint Benedict.
During the first part of the tour you will enjoy an introduction to the history of the monastery. Once the guided tour has ended, you will have free time to enjoy the fabulous landscape by yourself, to visit the local food market, to visit the audiovisual exhibition and to taste some typical liqueurs.
What to visit in Montserrat?
-La Moreneta: the most popular option, both for the locals and the foreigners. Depending on the time of the year there can be a long queue.
