Croatian Wilderness Cruise: Split, Brač, Korčula, Vis & more

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 2,409

MODERATE | CRUISE: Set out in search of Croatia's lesser known ports on a Premium or Traditional cruise vessel from Split. Some highlights of this itinerary include swimming at secluded beaches, the Blue & Green Cave, Korčula and the Lastovo chimneys.
Swim, snorkel, sunbathe, and explore the underworld of the Adriatic Sea.

Set out from Split, Croatia’s second largest city on this 8-day cruise through some of the country’s most spectacular islands.

Depart Split in the afternoon, dropping anchor at either Omis or Pucisca on the island of Brac. Admire the dramatic cliffs of the island in between wandering Omis’ pretty streets. Alternatively, Pusisca is home to Brac’s fabled white stone, used in the construction of the White House among many other buildings. From either port, your next destination is Korcula, the home island of Marco Polo, supposedly founded by Trojan hero Antenor. If you’ve got an ear for stories, this may be your favourite port along Croatia’s coast.

Sail on to the distant island of Lastovo, where you’ll visit a local winery and have the chance for some snorkeling. Then it’s on to Vis, long ‘off limits' to tourists thanks to its strategic importance to the Yugoslav navy. This has had the fortunate side effect of turning the island into something of a time capsule of the ‘classic’ Mediterranean before the secret of Croatia’s beauty got out to the masses. Enjoy the traditions that still thrive here, and perhaps visit Issa, Croatia’s oldest urban centre, dating back to the 4th century BC.

If conditions allow, you’ll visit the beautiful Blue Cave of Bisevo Island (extra cost) before sailing on to Stari Grad on Hvar. This is Croatia’s glamour island, beloved by the rich and famous, but there’s plenty to charm the budget traveller too, including the World Heritage listed old town. Then return to beautiful Brac, with a swim at the ever-changing Golden Horn before spending the night in the fishing town of Bol. Rent a scooter to reach the best views of the island!

Finally, return to Split for a tour of its UNESCO protected old city and the awesome Diocletan’s Palace. Despite its history and beauty, Split still sees fewer foreign visitors than nearby Dubrovnik, so take advantage of the thinner crowds and perhaps book an extra day to explore more of the city before you depart.

Other options include a climb to the old fortress above the town, a game of volleyball on the beach or simply stroll through the old town of Omis and discover the glorious long history through the abundant historical monuments. Pucisca on the northern side of Brac is a typical Mediterranean place at the bottom of a deep bay. It's claim to world fame is the white stone of Brac used in Liverpool Cathedral, White House in Washington and more. Usually, there is a chance to visit a stone-masonry workshop, one of the few such workshops still in operation in Europe. Enjoy the domestic food, wine and famous olive oil. Day 4

Lastovo to Ravnik (Green Cave) to Komiza/Vis

Early morning departure towards Vis island, which was "off limits" to tourists for many years. Because of its unique geographical position, it was a strategic harbour for the Yugoslav navy and in this period of isolation Vis has retained a rather special charm reflecting the "'Mediterranean as it once was" making it really interesting to see. Near Vis, there is tiny Ravnik Island, where the Green Cave (approx. EUR 10.-) is situated and which was named after the unusual greenish light that reflects in the sea from the hole on the top of the cave. Depending on the weather conditions we plan to have a short swim here, and then we sail further to the town of Komiza or Vis for overnight. Komiza is a typical Mediterranean place on the western part of the island, famous for its fishing traditions and heritage. Enjoy the walk through the narrow alleys and historic aspects, or maybe walk or relax on one of the pebble beaches, where the sea is fed by fresh water springs that stretch along the whole eastern side of the Komiza bay. The town of Vis is on the northern side of the island and was developed near the remains of ancient Issa, the first urban centre in Croatia, formed by the Greeks in 4th century B.C. Visit the remains of the Roman Baths, City museum or take a walk enjoying the view of the beautiful Villae Rusticae situated along the coast.

Free afternoon to explore this unique town and its famous horseshoe shaped bay. The famous Stari Grad Field (a plain) is the oldest in Croatia and the best preserved example of the ancient Greek system of agriculture. Both the old town and this plain are part of the world heritage protected by UNESCO. Overnight in one of the ports of Stari Grad, main or ferry port (2 km away) depending on availability in port. Bol is a typical fishermen's town which has become a popular tourist destination without being spoilt. Here you spend the night and have the opportunity to enjoy excellent fresh fish, local wines and other delicacies of this unique island. Take a walk on the seaside promenade or cycle along the promenade.
