Fabulous Finnish Lakes & Stockholm

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 2,071

Enjoy the winter allure of two great Nordic capitals, Stockholm and Helsinki, before travelling by escorted coach through Karelia's wonderful and almost impenetrable forests in all their winter magic. Spend three nights in the luxurious hotel and spa resort Jarvisydan, the perfect hub to venture out on a sleigh safari or go ice floating in the Oravi Channel, or simply indulge in some of the tempting sauna experiences offered at the resort.

This 8-day, first-class escorted coach trip through Finland begins next door in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. An overnight ferry takes you to some of Europe’s most beautiful lake districts in Finland, beginning with a night in Helsinki, to which you’ll return.

Consider booking an extra night or two in Stockholm before joining your trip. Located just off the path of most Europe tours, the Swedish capital is packed with fascinating museums, historic sights, palaces, and one of the highest standards of living in the world. It’s also one of Europe’s most attractive cities, from the old town of Gamla Stan, where you’ll enjoy a short tour, to the beautiful Stockholm archipelago. Catch the overnight ferry to Helsinki after two days exploring.

One of Europe’s hidden treasures, understated Helsinki boasts fascinating sights including the Temppeliaukio Church, carved into solid rock, plus numerous museums showcasing Finnish art and design. A sightseeing tour helps you get your bearings in the ‘Daughter of the Baltic’ before the drive to Lappeenranta, through the dense forests near the Russian border. You’ll follow the one of Finland’s most attractive drives to the village of Punkaharju, another feast for your camera and senses, with its 15th century castle and local delicacies.

Continue to the town of Porosalmi, your base for the next three nights as you explore the heart of Finland’s lake region. Visiting in the late winter and or early spring, you’ll probably have the chance to walk on frozen lakes and explore the awesome snowscapes of central Finland in the evocative winter light. Indulge in that most Finnish relaxation tradition, the sauna, and after dark, don’t forget to go outside and check for the Northern Lights.

Your final night returns you to Helsinki where you’ll have a chance to explore more of the city on your own.

Day 1

Stockholm

Thursday is the official arrival day at Stockholm Airport and begins with a 'Meet and Greet' by the Via Hansa-Borealis Destination Management's English-speaking representative and a Regular Arrival Transfer Service to the hotel for check-in.

Please consult the Via Hansa-Borealis Destination Management welcome letter, available at check-in at your hotel, to find out where and when to meet your tour leader. A short welcome meeting takes place in the evening at 6:00pm to review all relevant information on your upcoming tour program, including the departure time for a guided walk of Stockholm later that evening. This tour starts, typically, at 7:45pm from the lobby of your hotel.

Join us for a guided, evening walking tour of the beautiful Swedish capital. Since your hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the city you have easy access to the main sights such as Drottningsgatan, full of unique boutiques and every other retailer imaginable, and the beautiful Kungstradgarden, a popular hang-out with an ice-rink during winter.

The most delightful winter magic, however, can be found in Gamla Stan, Stockholm's historical Old Town with its labyrinth of cobbled streets and alleyways and, of course, the Royal Palace. While snow cannot be guaranteed, you can be sure that a fresh 'dusting' looks gorgeous on the historic buildings, creating an enchanting scenery, especially if some of the canals are frozen. Naturally, the city will be much quieter during the winter months, making a night stroll through the Old Town so much more romantic.

Day 2

Stockholm - Helsinki (Overnight Ferry)

After breakfast, a fabulous 3-hour sightseeing tour reveals that much of Stockholm is situated on the water stretching across fourteen islands, connected by 57 bridges and continuing along the banks to the archipelago where Lake Malaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Not surprisingly, the locals call it 'Beauty on Water'. Intriguingly, the city also embraces the unique character of an old 13th century town with modern high-tech architecture.

Your tour covers highlights such as the historically significant City Hall, best known as the place where the Nobel Prize festivities are being held and Gamla Stan, the Old Town, that will surprise you with its medieval atmosphere. The drive to the Fjallgatan on Sodermalm is a great finale to your tour, offering some incredible views over the Old Town, the museum island of Skeppsholmen, and the island of Djurgarden, the most visited tourist destination in Stockholm. The locals affectionately think of it as their balcony.

The visit ends at the pier where you board the comfortable overnight ferry of Tallink Silja Line, sailing along the Baltic Sea, bound for Helsinki.

Day 3

Helsinki - Lappeenranta

After arrival in Helsinki, around 9:45am, enjoy a 2-hour sightseeing tour of Finland's capital, also known as 'The Daughter of the Baltic Sea'. Included are significant highlights such as the Senate Square, the University and the Lutheran Cathedral, the Parliament Building and Finlandia Hall.

Other parts of your sightseeing include the colourful Market Square and a visit to Temppeliaukio Church, also called the 'Rock Church' as it is carved into solid rock. Away from the city centre is Kaivopuisto Park, one of the oldest and most loved parks in Helsinki. Situated on the southern tip of the peninsula, its terrain is very varied, featuring long winding paths, lined by ancient trees with splendid views to the sea.

The tour ends at your hotel and you are free for lunch (not included) until you continue your journey through Southern Finland.

Lappeenranta, is a four-hour drive away, travelling through Karelia, an area covered by almost impenetrable forests. It straddles both sides of the Finnish-Russian border and its remote wilderness landscape is a tapestry of white-water rapids, lakes and hiking routes. It's a land full of mythology and powerful history and Finland's most famous classical composer, Jean Sibelius, wrote a piece called the 'Karelia Suite.' Lappeenranta, located on the banks of Lake Saimaa, Finland's largest lake, has been under both Swedish and Russian control during its lifetime. Today, Russia still owns half of the 43km Saimaa Canal that links Lappeenranta to the Gulf of Finland but 'leased' it to Finland until 2063.

Arrival at your hotel should be in good time for you to check out some of the hotel's facilities before you enjoy a leisurely dinner (included) at the property.

Day 4

Lappeenranta - Savonlinna - Lakeland Area Rantasalmi - Jarvisydan Resort

After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, you depart by private coach on what was voted in Finland as the 'Road of the Century'. It is a drive through spectacular Finnish winter wonderlands towards the tiny village of Punkaharju. Travelling along a narrow thread of land between two lakes, that accommodates both the road and a railway track, you'll quickly find out that the shores of the frozen lakes on either side are tantalizingly close.

Close by is the historic frontier settlement of Savonlinna, scattered across a garland of small islands, and one of Finland's prettiest towns. The dramatic looking, 15th century Olavinlinna Castle is, to this day, the world's northernmost medieval stone castle still standing. This is an excellent spot for lunch (not included) and you have an opportunity to try a local dish called 'Muikku', delicious small white fish caught from nearby Lake Saimaa.

After lunch, you continue today's trip towards your home for the next three nights: Hotel and Spa Resort Jarvisydan in Porosalmi. The history of the resort goes back to 1685, the result of an agreement between the Czar of Russia and the King of Sweden to build and maintain a road through Finland. One of the key stipulations was that a way station to feed horses and to accommodate travelers had to be established every 30 km along the way, even during winter. Porosalmi was one of those stations and the head of the Heiskanen family who had been granted 600 hectares of land for his exemplary military service was asked, in return, to open an inn to serve travelers in this remote part of Lake Saima. The current owner of the resort, Markus Heiskanen, represents the 11th generation of the family, running what is, of course, a somewhat more upscale operation.

Once you are checked in, take some time to check out the different saunas and pools or enjoy dinner at the medieval restaurant Piikatytto, which is included for all three nights.

Accommodation is available in the spectacular Scenery Suites; cottages complete with glass ceiling. Please note, all cottages have double beds. Rooms with twin beds are available at the Jarvisydan Hotel.

Day 5

Jarvisydan

Today is your opportunity to walk on water. Well, not quite, you'll be walking on a frozen lake while wearing snowshoes. Your private coach takes you to Sahanlahti Resort, around 90 km away, through peaceful and magnificent snowscapes. This is a great group activity and once you arrive at the resort, a local guide is there to ensure that your outing is going to be lots of fun. As with any other physical exercise that is a little more demanding, your guide will lead you through some easy warm-up exercises and helps you to get familiar with your snowshoes and other equipment.

Walking on a frozen lake might strike some as foolhardy, but the layer of ice is often 6 inches thick, strong enough to drive a truck across it. In any case, the guide will not allow you anywhere near the lake unless it is absolutely certain that the ice is ready for that hypothetical truck. Apart from snowshoes, you're going to be equipped with walking poles that can be adjusted to the right height for added balance and stability. All that's left is to keep your concentration, listen to the guide's instructions and, most importantly, enjoy walking across a frozen lake.

After this great morning exercise, enjoy a local lunch (included) and then return to your hotel. The rest of your day is at leisure and, perhaps, a good time to try a sauna.

After dinner (included) you can enjoy gorgeous starry skies from your window and, who knows, maybe the Northern Lights come out to dance.

Day 6

Jarvisydan

Breakfast in such a delightful setting is always a treat and afterwards, you have the option to simply spend time to relax, strolling around the gorgeous property or indulge in what is thought to be a new kind of Finnish lake wellness experience. The spa at Hotel and Spa Resort Jarvisydan is the most ecological of its type in Finland, with different kinds of saunas that include infrared, stone and wood versions.

Saunas, as you might know, are a huge deal in Finland. Its population of 5.5 million people is served by around two million saunas, including one located in a Burger King in Helsinki.

After breakfast at the hotel, you meet at the hotel reception to drive back to Helsinki via the cities of Mikkeli and Lahti. After arrival in Helsinki, the rest of your afternoon is at leisure, providing you with an opportunity to see a little more of the city on your own.
