London to Edinburgh Adventure

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
AU$ On Request

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: Starting from London, visit historic sites including Stonehenge, learn a bit of Rock and Roll history, and take in the countryside en route to Edinburgh by train. Once in the Scottish capital, discover the secrets of the Royal Mile, enjoy a few drams of whisky at the Johnny Walker Journey of Flavour and explore the wonders of Loch Ness, Glencoe & the Highlands.

This 9-day, tailor-made trip invites you to explore two of the most exciting cities in the British Isles, romantic Edinburgh, and timeless London.

Start things off in London with a vintage double-decker tour, ideal for taking in the sights of one of the world's most exciting cities. Pass by Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and Saint Paul's Cathedral, then disembark for a tour of Buckingham Palace, the official residence of His Majesty the King, followed by a cruise on the Thames, taking in London's icons from its famous waterway. More British icons await on your second day, with a Classic Rock and Beatles tour taking you to Kings Road and other spots synonymous with Swinging 60s London. Walk in the footsteps of Pink Floyd, Freddie Mercury, and Jimi Hendrix, through to modern-day stars like Adele.

There's so much more to do in London, so take a full day at leisure to enjoy. Perhaps explore the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the Churchill War Rooms, or the cavernous British Museum. Check out tickets for a West End show that night, or take in a performance at the National Theatre or Shakespeare's Globe on the South Bank. The following day, trek out to Stonehenge, wondering at its mysteries and astronomical precision before returning for your final night in London.

Time to board your train bound for Edinburgh. This romantic city combines regal beauty with a scrappy, down-to-earth attitude that is quintessentially Scottish. Check out some sightseeing ideas while you're on the train, since you'll have a Hop-On Hop-Off sightseeing bus ticket the following day. Your options include Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the Scottish National Museum, the haunted graveyard at Greyfriar's, Queen Street Gardens, the Royal Mile, HMS Britannia, and so many others.

Need to narrow it down? Save Edinburgh Castle and perhaps the Royal Mile for the following day, when a guided tour takes you to explore their ins and outs. Then set your taste buds dancing Scottish Style with a Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour. Of course, if you haven't journeyed into the Highlands, you haven't really been to Scotland! A full-day trip takes you to Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the foot of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

Return to Edinburgh for one more day at leisure before you depart. If you're here during the excitement of the Fringe, stop by the box office for same-day deals, or take the bus to Roslyn Chapel to uncover some of its Templar mysteries.

Classic Rock and Beatles Sites (Summer)

This Classic Rock Legends tour covers sites and locations relevant to the history of so many 60s, 70s, and 80s artists; tour sites that made the 60's swing. You'll visit locations where London's hippie underground 'counter-culture' took off, where the 70's punk revolution took place, and the boutique pubs and clubs that made these decades, inspiring hundreds of well-known lyrics and melodies. Found in the boroughs of Belgravia and Chelsea, The Kings Road was the heart of Swingin' 60's London, and is today chock full of music, art and fashion heritage. See places of importance in the histories of the Beatles, Stones, Eric Clapton and Cream, early Pink Floyd, and Pete Townsend. Discover the inspiration of London Calling and where punk was 'born' and later, check out the Beatles' homes, former offices, gig sites and where the Sargent Pepper's cover was shot. An abundance of legendary Stones locations here too! Later, in Kensington, you'll learn about the neighborhood's relevance to Queen and Freddie Mercury before enjoying a comfort stop at Bill Wyman's Sticky Fingers restaurant. In Holland Park and Notting Hill, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix fans will be well served with a range of entertaining stories, and later, you'll learn about the cultural shift of London's post-war scene and the music it spawned. Here you'll find places that hosted Bob Marley, the Clash, early Pink Floyd, and a range of recording studios, from punk to Adele. Rounding out your day, make the quick trip to Abbey Road to visit a few Fab Four homes, gig sites, and of course, the iconic road crossing where you can snap your own crossing; shoes highly recommended. Please note, this is a small coach panoramic tour with photo stops and occasional walking.

Secrets of Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle - Walking Tour

The beautiful city is waiting for you. The best way to explore Edinburgh is to follow your feet. Where the buses can't take you, and the guide books don't show you is where the real stories can be found - the closes, wynds, courtyards and homes of Old Edinburgh. This walking tour will paint a vivid picture of the colourful past and people - see the secrets and tell the tales - the culture, crime and politics of Scotland's capital. This is an experience shared by Mercat historians.

Your experience of the medieval city is then completed with a visit to Edinburgh Castle. The Castle dominates Scotland's capital city from its great rock. Its story has helped shape the nation's story. Battles and sieges were fought over it, royalty lived and died within its walls, and countless generations have been and inspired by it. Visit the Castle and let your Mercat guide reveal its remarkable history.

Day 7

Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands

You depart Edinburgh and travel past Linlithgow palace and Stirling Castle. To the north is the National Wallace Monument, which commemorates Scotland's great hero, William Wallace.

You pass close to the location where William Wallace defeated the English army in 1297, and after this take a short stop for coffee at Callander.

The scenery changes dramatically as you venture further into the Highlands. The flat plains of the lowlands transform into shimmering lochs, rugged mountains, and forest-filled glens. The alluring beauty makes it easy to forget this was once a battleground of the fiercely territorial Highland clans.

You then head down to Scotland's most famous valley, Glencoe, where you'll be mesmerised by the beautiful cliff faces and steep slopes.

After Glencoe, you enter a deep glacial valley, known as the Great Glen. Passing through the town of Fort William you travel in the shadow of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, before arriving at Fort Augustus on the shore of Loch Ness.

At 23 miles long and over 700ft deep, Loch Ness is the largest loch by volume in Scotland. The loch is best known for the legendary Loch Ness Monster ("Nessie"), and you can take the opportunity to go in search of the monster on a fantastic boat cruise. Or you can simply enjoy the beautiful scenery on the banks.

Fort Augustus boasts the Caledonian Canal, which is a great spot to relax and watch the boats sail by. You stop here with time to eat lunch and take in the scenery around Scotland's most famous loch.

From Loch Ness, you head south through the mountains of the Cairngorms National Park. Your route travels alongside Loch Laggan (the setting for the BBC series 'Monarch of the Glen'), over the Drumochter Pass and past 13th century Blair Castle.

You continue south through the forests of Perthshire and make a short refreshment stop on the way. South of Perth you drive past Loch Leven. Then it's over the Queensferry Crossing before returning to Edinburgh.
