Romantic Germany Self-Drive: Heidelberg, Innsbruck, Black Forest & More

Duration

MODERATE | SELF-DRIVE: This one week Germany self drive tour takes you through the country’s most picturesque regions and cities, including Heidelberg, the Black Forest, the mountains and castles of Bavaria, and lively Munich.

This 9-day self-drive Germany trip, staying in three and four star accommodations, is focused on the country’s postcard favourites, including the evocative Black Forest, and its most picturesque big city, Munich.

Frankfurt may be more famous for its airport and banks than its sights, but those who arrive early will still enjoy wandering the Romerplatz, or strolling the banks of the Main before travelling to Heidelberg. Heidelberg is Germany’s great university town, and a popular destination in its own right. It’s also your gateway to one of the most famous forest regions in the world. The beautiful Black Forest is shrouded in myth, and offers plenty of walks to sights such as Ravenna Gorge. The following day, see how cuckoo clocks are made, and enjoy a Black Forest cheese tasting. You’ll also take in spectacular views of the Alps from Lindau, an island in Lake Constance.

Time to explore the castles and beer halls of Bavaria. Germany’s most iconic region is also its most unique, bearing little resemblance to the rest of the country it’s come to represent in popular imagination. But the sights are spectacular, including Neuschwanstein Castle, home to mad King Ludwig II. You’ll also stop in at Wieskirche Church and Linderhof Castle. Sneak an extra country into your trip when you cross the border to visit Innsbruck. It’s perhaps Austria’s most famous and beautiful Alpine city, and a two time host city to the Winter Olympics. Innsbruck has been hailed as a medieval wonder, the ultimate ski resort town, a university hub, and more, so there’s a side of it to satisfy any travel interest. Look closely for Roman influences in the architecture.

Arrive at your final destination, Munich. The country’s third largest city is the Germany of fairy tales and travel brochures, awash with medieval architecture, and atmospheric drinking dens (Non-beer drinkers needn’t worry. Germany does a fine range of wines as well.). Take a city tour around the main attractions including Marienplatz, the city square famous for its clock tower. Those visiting in September may be caught up in the fun and frivolity of Oktoberfest, but a visit to Munich is memorable at any time of year. You’ll also take a side trip to the romantic medieval city of Rothenburg before you depart.
