Vistas of Italy and Switzerland: Venice to Zurich

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 6,814

From historic Venice to the soul-stirring alpine villages of Switzerland, join a memory-making adventure that takes in time honoured traditions, local culture and even some remarkable rail journeys - all among some of the world's most enchanting scenery.

Enjoy some of the finest views in Europe on this 10-day small group trip from Venice to Zurich. Begin in the romantic canal city before weaving your way through the Italian lakes bound for the Alps. Board the famous Glacier Express for Switzerland’s most spectacular vistas.

The adventure begins in Venice, where you’ll have a chance to explore the intricate back streets with your guide before seeing how famed Venetian makes are made. Go on to the lakeside resort town of Sirmione for dinner, and spend the next day tasting the culinary delights of nearby Borghetto. Perhaps explore Sirmione’s medieval castle when you enjoy some time at leisure in the afternoon. Travel to Sulzano, where you can take a private boat tour, visiting a fishing village and tasting more local flavours.

Set within traditional vineyards in a countryside dotted with medieval towns, Iseo is a great place to experience the flavours and lifestyle of Northern Italy. You’ll even learn some of its secrets in a cooking class before going on to Tirano where you’ll board the Bernina Express. This iconic train journey connects Tirano with Pontersina in Switzerland, crossing the Alps through some of Europe’s most gorgeous scenery. This is the first of two great rail journeys on this trip. The other departs the following day from St Moritz. The Glacier Express will take you to Andermatt, where you’ll disembark for the journey to Interlaken.

This region is Switzerland at its most dynamic and geographically exciting. Enjoy a leisurely steam train ride to the top of the Brienzer Rothorn for lunch, then return to Interlaken via paddle steamer and enjoy some time to explore one of the country’s most picturesque cities. Of course, no trip to Switzerland would be complete without a chocolate tasting! You’ll stop by Aeschbach in Lucerne to try the good stuff, and enjoy a little time to explore before going on to Zurich.

Travellers are divided on Switzerland’s largest city and main gateway, but we recommend booking at least one more day here to explore its many museums, galleries, and historic neighbourhoods before departing.
