About Botswana

Botswana became an independent nation in 1966 after being under British administration since 1885. Today, it is, without doubt, an animal viewer’s paradise with 38% of the land devoted to national parks and wildlife reserves. Botswana safaris to the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert are a highlight of an African adventure.

The type of landscape here is different from many other destinations offering game viewing. This is mainly due to the large amount of water which covers the land, especially in the wet season when the principal rivers flood their banks. For example, the Okavango River bursts its banks and an extremely large amount of water flows into the scorched desert instead of into the sea. The web of channels created by this odd quirk of nature never stays the same because no two floods are ever the same.

When is the best time to visit Botswana?

Botswana has two seasons: it has a hot, wet summer and a cooler, dry winter. The presence or absence of water governs wildlife viewing. This obviously affects the peak and off-peak seasons. The best time to visit Chobe and the Okavango Delta on a Botswana safari is during the Southern African winter, which is from May to October. You should experience cool mornings with pleasantly warm days. Rainfall is non-existent and there are no bugs. It is a time you see the movement of herds while animals search for water and it is the best time to see them by boat cruise safari. Elephant herds make a boat cruise here not to be missed.

The best time to visit the Central Kalahari, which is further south, is during the summer months from November to April when the rain transforms the parched landscape. Migratory birds arrive and animals give birth. The summer rains are unlikely to trouble you. The period immediately before the rains is the hottest and driest of the year making the surviving waterholes a big attraction for the animals.

Top places to view wildlife on a Botswana Safari Tour

Okavango Delta

In Botswana, animals, for the most part, are allowed to roam freely. The Okavango Delta is the world’s second-largest game reserve and is made up of wetlands and drylands. Its unique ecosystem consists of channels, lagoons, ox-bow lakes and flooded grasslands, plus many palm-fringed islands. This attracts 122 species of animals, 79 species of fish, 400 species of birds, 64 species of reptiles plus 1300 species of plants to grow here.

Moremi Game Reserve

On a Botswana safari, more game viewing is available at the very beautiful Moremi Reserve, which was voted the best African game reserve in 2008. It possesses well-maintained trails and accommodation that ranges from luxury lodges to public campsites for self-drivers. The reserve is the only part of the Okavango Delta that is officially cordoned off for the preservation of wildlife. It is of extreme importance in connection with conservation science.

Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park, with the beautiful Chobe River winding through it, is made up of flood plains, swamps and woodlands. It is a good place on a Botswana safari to see 4 of the Big 5 (no Rhino) as well as other wildlife. It is famous for its large herds of elephants and Cape buffalo and it is not uncommon to see hundreds of elephants at a time. An excellent way to go on a Botswana safari is by boat which will allow you to get up close and personal with hippos and crocodiles.
