The city was originally founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South Africa. Following the First World War, harbour activities were transferred to Walvis Bay causing a major economic blow for the city. As time passed, the potential for a holiday destination was recognized and after the development of a uranium mine in 1976, the city began to expand and prospered.
