The southernmost, driest, largest and least densely populated region in Nambia, Karas is one of only two regions that span the entire width of the country. Its western border is shared with the Atlantic Ocean while South Africa’s Northern Cape province borders Karas to the south and the east.
Keetmanshoop is the capital of the region and provides major road, rail and air links to other parts of the country. Other main towns in the area include Oranjemund and Lüderitz. Oranjemund is located on the banks of the Orange River while Lüderitz is a historic harbour town that is known for its colonial architecture.
The Karas region is perhaps best known for being the home of the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. It is 160 km long and 30 km wide with its sidewalls reaching some 550 m high. A favourite spot amongst ecotourists on a Namibia vacation, the Fish River Canyon hiking trail is one of the more popular hiking trails in Southern Africa. Another famous part of the Karas region is Tsau-Khaeb (also known as the Sperrgebiet) which is a protected Diamond Area and is one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots. This part of the country is a diamond mining area that remains off-limits to the public. Only a small percentage of the area is used for mining and as such, a great deal of the wildlife found here remains undisturbed.
