Kunene Tours & Travel Packages

  • Etosha National Park

A highly underdeveloped part of Namibia, the Kunene region is considered by many to represent a true African wilderness experience on a Namibia safari. Kunene shares a western border with the Atlantic Ocean and borders Angola in the north and in the east. Domestically, the region is surrounded by Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa and Erongo. The name of the region comes from the Kunene River.

Kunene is home to the Himba ethnic group who live along the banks of the Kunene River. A nomadic people, the Himba tribe still maintain their traditional lifestyles based on agriculture, sheep, goats and some cattle. The females of the tribe are known for covering their skin with otjize (a mixture of butter fat and ochre) which gives their skin a red tinge. It helps to protect their skin from the sun but also symbolizes life in Himba culture.

Etosha National Park is located in the Kunene region and is one of the world’s largest wildlife refuges. Much of Etosha is covered in savanna woodland and offers excellent game viewing opportunities in one of Africa’s most accessible parks on a Namibia safari. During dry months, the water sources within the park attract herds of big game including the endangered black rhinoceros. It is not uncommon to see African elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, jackals, hyenas and more within Etosha.
