Located in southern Tanzania and covering a total area of 54,600 square kilometres (21,100 square miles) Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in the world, ideal for a Tanzania safari.

Established in 1922, sixty years later, Selous Game Reserve was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its diverse wildlife and because of its undisturbed nature. The vast size of the area means that much of it has remained untouched by humans. In fact, within Selous, no permanent human habitation is permitted and all human entry and exit are carefully monitored.

Although the majority of Selous is used as a hunting reserve, controlled quotas ensure that the impact on wildlife populations is low and it remains the least exploited wildlife sanctuary in Africa. The funds raised from game hunting are put back into the reserve to keep it sustainable.

While high in wildlife populations, the densities of animals are quite low compared to other parks due to the size of the reserve. Selous contains about one-third of the world’s wild dogs. Concentrations of hippos, buffaloes, crocodiles and elephants are some of the largest in the world and Selous is one of the few places where leopards outnumber lions, yet they are still hard to spot on a Tanzania safari.

A section to the north of the reserve along the Rufiji River has been designated as a photographic zone which remains popular with tourists.
