Zambia is an economically stable up-and-coming country. The capital, Lusaka, is a sprawling fast growing city that didn’t exist before the 20th Century and is rich in art galleries featuring local artists.

The best-known attraction on a Zambia vacation is, of course, Victoria Falls, named after Queen Victoria by the explorer, David Livingstone who also had the town of Livingstone named after him. It is the world’s largest curtain of falling water and is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the “Smoke That Thunders”.

It is twice as large as Niagara Falls and several times longer. The falls are divided between Zambia and Zimbabwe and are 2 kilometres/1.2 miles wide and drop 100 metres/ 330 feet. One exciting adventure is to walk across a footbridge through swirling clouds of mist to Knife Edge Point for a magnificent bird’s eye view of the falls.

South Luangwa National Park, which varies from dense woodlands to open grassy plains, contains one of Africa’s largest elephant populations ideal for Zambia safaris. It is also good for viewing leopards and birdlife. Try a walking safari for a truly exhilarating experience.

Kafue National Park is the largest national park in the country and is excellent for canoeing safaris around huge pods of hippos. One can even undertake a horse riding safari.
