Lower Zambezi National Park Safaris, Vacations & Wildlife Experiences

Located in southeastern Zambia, the Lower Zambezi National Park is situated on the north bank of the Zambezi River. The park itself is surrounded by a much larger game management area (GMA) which means there are no fences between the park and the GMA allowing both animals and people to travel through easily on Zambia safaris.

The area was declared a national park in 1983. However, before this, it served as the private game reserve of the president of Zambia. Its relatively recent designation as a national park means the area remained untouched by tourists and is considered by many to be one of the last pristine wilderness areas available in Africa. 

Covering an area of 4,092 square kilometres (1,580 square miles), the park has no tarred roads and is still relatively underdeveloped. On  Zambia safaris, the park’s floodplain hosts many large mammals including buffalo, elephants, lions, leopards, zebra and antelope while the river is home to crocodiles and hippopotami. Fishing is good along the river and the banks host an exceptional array of birdlife. There are many opportunities on a Zambia vacation to explore the park in different ways including game drives in open-topped 4WD vehicles, walking safaris and boat trips while canoeing along the Zambezi River is a truly unforgettable experience.
