With an interesting mix of European and Chinese culture, Macau is located 60kms southwest of Hong Kong. It is comprised of the Macau Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, which are now connected by a landfill forming the Cotai Strip. For the best Macau tour, allow time to explore both the peninsula and islands.

Once a Portuguese colony until the handover in 1999, Macau is one of two special administrative regions of China (the other being Hong Kong). Its Mediterranean influence can be seen everywhere as Portuguese traders started settling and administering Macau in the 16th century. The cuisine of Macau relies heavily on its colonial past with both Portugal and China. Food in Macau is often seen as fusion cooking because many dishes blend flavours from different cultures including Europe, Latin America, Africa, India and Southeast Asia as well as local ingredients.

When is the best time to embark on a Macau Tour?

Macau has a subtropical climate with cool, dry winters and hot, wet summers. The best time to visit Macau is October through December when the temperature and humidity have declined somewhat and the weather is stable and sunny.

Macua Trip and Vacation Highlights

Cotai Strip

Continuously developing, the Cotai Strip consists mostly of newly built hotels and casinos. Macau is booming as Asia’s gambling mecca. Chinese tourists flock to this region as gambling is illegal in mainland China. Unlike in downtown Macau, the casinos on Cotai Strip are mega resorts that often include a hotel and shopping mall. The Venetien is the largest casino on the strip. In addition to its many blackjack tables and slot machines, it also includes a 3000-room hotel and Macau’s largest shopping centre. Other popular casino resorts are the City of Dreams casino and The Galaxy casino. For some travellers, the endless gambling, shopping and pool parties provide perfect entertainment on a trip to Macau. But aside from its casinos, Macau features European-style streets, churches, fortresses, and food. With most of the population being of Chinese descent, the integration of the two cultures is seamless.

Gardens and Wildlife

Gardens are central to the nature and wildlife on offer in Macau. These gardens host many medicinal herbs and plants that highlight the long relationship that people in this part of the world have with natural medicines. Despite its gardens, Macau is not very rich in vegetation due to increased urbanization. This urbanization also means that animal life is not very diverse and consists mainly of birds, lizards, snakes, and some wildcats, with the water surrounding Macau being home to crocodiles.

Macau Tower

Standing tall at 338 metres, Macau Tower offers scenic views from its observation deck that overlooks the skyline, as well as restaurants and theatres. Visitors to Macau tower can enjoy a sumptuous dining experience at one of the many restaurants available. For those looking for retail and entertainment, the tower is also complete with movie theatres, gaming centres and shopping venues. Adventure seekers on a Macau vacation can try Skywalk X, a thrilling walk along the tower’s outer rim, and also a tethered skyjump off of the tower’s edge.

With its old European-style architecture, world-class museums, beautiful gardens, and of course the many developing casinos, Macau is fast becoming a notable tourist destination.
