Kuching is the capital and largest city of the state of Sarawak, located on the northwest part of the Island of Borneo in Malaysia. It is divided by the Sarawak River, with its south shore inhabited primarily by the Chinese, while the north shore is predominantly Malay, with old kampong houses lining the river, to be experienced on Malaysia vacations.

Founded in 1827 by the Sultan of Brunei, Kuching was then ruled in 1841 by the Brooked Administration, started by British adventurer, James Brooke. The administration focused on Kuching’s development, building up various infrastructures. Kuching continued to prosper until World War II when Japanese forces took over, after which the British Crown helped revitalize the city, allowing Kuching to maintain its state capital standing as the Federation of Malaysia was formed in 1963.

Kuching is known for its gorgeous sunsets and offers ideal viewing spots from the Waterfront, Santubong Peninsular or Bako Peninsular.

Considered one of Malaysia’s cleanest cities, Kuching is extremely pedestrian-friendly, with its city core, featuring tree-lined sidewalks, compact enough to cover on foot.

At the heart of the city is Tua Pek Kong Temple, Kuching’s oldest Chinese temple, situated opposite the Chinese Museum.

Kuching Civic Centre is a landmark site featuring a 3-building complex, one of which includes Malaysia’s first planetarium, the Sultan Iskandar Planetarium. An umbrella-shaped tower allows visitors full views of the city, with its concrete skyscrapers situated amidst lush greenery.

A tourist haven, on a Malaysia vacation, Kuching offers various museums, parks and gardens, markets, shopping centres, multi-ethnic restaurants, and water activities. A modern city with old-world charm and busy nightlife, Kuching is described as one of the most attractive cities in Southeast Asia.
