Marking part of the border of Tibet and Nepal, Mount Everest is the highest mountain on earth. With its peak at 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level, Mount Everest is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas. It can be viewed during a visit on Nepal tours.

Mount Everest’s massif features other neighbouring tall peaks – Lhotse: 8,516 m (27,940 ft), Nuptse: 7,855 m (25,771 ft), and Changtse: 7,580 m (24,870 ft).

About Mount Everest

Known by surveyors as Peak XV, Mount Everest was named in 1865 after Colonel Sir George Everest, a Welsh surveyor and Surveyor-General of India from 1830-1843. Despite Sir Everest’s objections, his successor, Andrew Waugh, wanted to name it in his honour, although it’s been known by Tibetans as Chomolungma for years before, and to the Nepalese as Sagarmatha since the early 60s.

Climbing Mount Everest

Although Mount Everest presents dangers such as altitude sickness, weather and wind, many experienced mountaineers and adventurists dream of reaching its peak. There are two base camps from which to commence the climb. The southeast ridge from Nepal is located approximately 100kms (62 miles) from Kathmandu, and the north ridge from Tibet is located approximately 300kms (190 miles) from Lhasa.

For those on Nepal vacations not wanting to make the climb, breathtaking views of Mount Everest can be seen from various treks, in both Tibet and Nepal, making it one of life’s most unforgettable experiences.
