Koh Chang

Koh Chang located off the southern coast of Thailand is the largest Thai island after Phuket and Koh Samui. It is not heavily populated and is made up of a dense, steep jungle. It is part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park. The coastline is dotted with beaches and villages. It offers rainforest, mountain peaks, coral reefs and many waterfalls as well as superb beaches. Although it has become popular in recent years, it has retained its remote and fairly wild character. The island is also home to a wide range of wildlife including birds, snakes, deer and a number of elephants. An island is a great place for snorkeling, diving and jungle hiking on a Thailand vacation.

There are two popular beach areas which are situated on the west coast. White Sand Beach is the most popular. This was once a small village but is now a resort with hotels, restaurants, bars and shops. There is a good stretch of sand with clear, calm waters for swimming and in the evening, tables are laid out along the beach for dining. The southern end of White Sand Beach is where the action is with a number of good restaurants and night spots. Lonely Beach is the party centre of the island. It is split into two parts, the beach section running the bottom of the mountain and the village section. On the actual beach, there are four places with accommodation with the rest in and around the village. It is a fun place to stay, attracting budget travellers and backpackers.

There is more to Koh Chang than just stunning beaches. Some of the most popular activities are kayaking, jungle trekking, diving and snorkeling. Another highlight is visiting the many waterfalls located throughout the island. For something more relaxing, you can take a Thai cooking class, ride on the back of an elephant on a jungle trek and enjoy a massage in one of the many spas on the island. Scuba diving and fishing are the most popular activities because of the beautiful corals and the many kinds of fish.
