About the Phi Phi Islands

Ko Phi Phi or the Phi Phi Islands is an archipelago of six islands found in the province of Krabi, in southern Thailand. Situated 50 km southeast of Phuket, approaching the western shores of mainland Thailand, the islands are part of a protected maritime park. It is considered to be one of the most naturally beautiful islands in Thailand with its coral, long white sandy beaches and backdrop of limestone mountains with sheer cliffs

Archeologically speaking, Ko Phi Phi is considered one of the oldest communities in Thailand, dating back to prehistoric periods. More recently, the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami destroyed most of the island’s infrastructure, but redevelopment was swift, with stricter regulations for the islands in place.

When should you visit the Phi Phi Islands?

The Phi Phi Islands offer a climate similar to that of Krabi and Phuket. The climate is hot and humid due to the tropical monsoons but is not divided into traditional seasons. Instead, months can be split into the rainy season (May to October) and the dry season (December and March). The rainy season can expect heavier rainfall, averaging 20 days per month, while the dry season only experiences rainfall an average of 3 days per month. The annual temperatures remain constant between the seasons, with average temperatures ranging from 24 to 31° Celsius (75 - 88 Fahrenheit).

Ko Phi Phi Don

Ko Phi Phi Don is the largest and the main island of the group. With an area of 28 sq km, it is the only one featuring permanent inhabitants. Initially populated by Muslim fishermen during the late 1940s, Ko Phi Phi Don became a coconut plantation. Featuring white sand beaches, the island is now a huge tourist destination, but still attracts backpackers who love its laid-back atmosphere on trips to Thailand.

Ko Phi Phi Leh

Ko Phi Phi Leh is the second-largest island and lies off the southernmost tip of Phi Phi Don. It offers a wonderful combination of small sandy beaches, coral reefs and vertical cliffs. Made famous for the filming of The Beach in 2000, Ko Phi Phi Leh features the Viking Cave, from which there is a thriving bird's nest soup industry.

With coral reefs and limestone karsts featured in and around the archipelago, visitors can enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming and climbing, in addition to kayaking and sunbathing while in the Phi Phi Islands on Thailand tours.
