  • Dalat Cathedral is a popular inclusion on a Vietnam vacation.

  • Statues at Chua Linh Phuoc Pagoda

Dalat is located in the South Central Highlands of Vietnam and is the capital of Lam Dong province.

Located 1,500 m (4,900 ft) above sea level on the Langbiang Plateau, Dalat’s climate is quite temperate, earning the nickname ‘City of Eternal Spring’, for the constant mist covering the valleys. With cooler temperatures, Dalat offers Vietnam various agricultural products such as cauliflower and cabbage and is renowned for its orchids and roses.

Dalat is known as an area for scientific research in the fields of biotechnology and nuclear physics. In the 1890s, during the French occupation, Alexandre Yersin, a French bacteriologist (and protégé of the renowned French chemist, Louis Pasteur) was one of a few explorers in the area of Dalat, looking to build a resort area in the highlands.
In contrast to Vietnam’s heat and humidity, Dalat would serve as a pleasant escape, especially on a Vietnam vacation.

With its first hotel built in 1907, Dalat soon became a tourist destination, filled with villas, boulevards, health spas, golf courses, parks, schools, and homes. Dominated by French colonial architecture, Dalat looks like a colourful cross between Vietnam and the French Alps.

Built in 1938, and earning recognition as a national historical monument in 2001, Dalat Railway Station features an Art Deco design and includes three pointed roofs, a characteristic of communal houses in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, as well as representing the three peaks of Dalat’s iconic mountain, Lang Biang.

Hang Nga Guesthouse, popularly known as the “Crazy House”, resembles a giant banyan tree while incorporating sculptured design elements representing animals, mushrooms, spider webs and caves. Opened in 1990 and described as a “fairy tale” house, Hang Nga has gained worldwide recognition for its unique and unconventional architecture.

A continually growing city, Dalat attracts adventure seekers, with its mountain biking, hiking, and canyoning experiences, as well as many honeymooners on Vietnam tour packages, who visit for its European charm and romantic scenery, including Xuan Huong Lake. Approximately 5km in diameter, this man-made lake is a prime attraction in Dalat and offers romantic and relaxing experiences along its banks.

Pine-covered hills, flower-filled parks, quaint streets, and nearby hill tribe villages are just part of the natural and colourful beauty Dalat has to offer.
