A Fiji vacation has everything one could expect from a tropical paradise. Not only is it an all-year-round destination due to its geographical location and tropical climate but there are numerous other attractive reasons to travel to Fiji.

Fiji is located in the heart of the South Pacific, an 11-hour flight from Los Angeles/San Francisco and just 4 hours from Sydney Australia, or 3.5 hours from Brisbane, Australia.

Imagine pristine sandy beaches, remote islands, crystal clear waters, and soft coral reefs, with lush green vegetation, coconut plantations, volcanic mountains, and a unique culture all awaiting exploration further inland on a Fiji Vacation.

About Fiji

Fiji is actually made up of 330 individual islands of which 106 are inhabited. The major attractions are naturally the Fiji resorts, and many of our Fiji vacations include a stay at one or more of these beautiful properties. Tahiti may be famous for underwater bungalows, but Fiji has its own unique style of beachfront accommodation called Bures. These detached Fijian rooms usually include traditional elements such as a thatched roof and Fijian décor, plus the modern conveniences of a resort room including air conditioning, an ensuite bathroom, and king bedding. Most are beachfront, but Likuliku Island Resort also offers Overwater Bures.

Fiji Islands

Once you have decided on the type of accommodation you would like on your Fiji vacation, the next step is to consider where. Let’s start with some of the highlights of this destination. There are two large islands, Viti Levu, where most of the population lives, and Vanua Levu which is much quieter.

Denarau Island

On Viti Levu, close to Nadi (the gateway to the country) is Denarau Island. Though not strictly an island in the geographic sense, this is where there a number of large resort hotels are located. Just 20 minutes from Nadi airport, Denarau is a great choice for travellers having a stopover in Fiji on their way to Australia or New Zealand, or for those who are short on time. Port Denarau is also the departure point for ferries and cruises to the outer islands of Fiji, as well as day cruises.

Fiji is a wonderfu family holiday destination

Viti Levu

On Viti Levu, one place to visit is the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, with its beautiful orchids, lily ponds and many other exotic plants. Spend a day enjoying the beautiful scenery, as well as visiting Viseisei Village, the legendary landing site of the first Fijians, where you will be shown through the village, with the chance to browse handicraft displays. Watching a fire-walking ceremony is an exciting highlight of any Fiji vacation. This is perhaps the country’s most famous ritual and is today performed by the men of the islands as a tribute to their tribal warrior ancestors.

The Coral Coast

Stretching between Nadi and the capital, Suva, is the Coral Coast with 80 kilometres/50 miles of barrier reef beaches and a selection of good resorts. The Coral Coast is the adventure capital of Fiji, centred on Sigatoka, where clients will find the greatest variety of activities including zip lining, rafting, jet boating on the Sigatoka River, cave tours, and nature/wildlife excursions. That’s in addition to activities offshore, which include snorkeling, SCUBA diving, paddle boarding and more, depending on the resort.

From here, it is easy to visit places such as Pacific Harbour, home of the country’s most famous golf course, the Pearl Fiji Championship Golf Course. On the Coral Coast, there are many adventure-based activities to be enjoyed in Pacific Harbour, including the famous Fiji shark dive.

Vanua Levu

Vanua Levu is reached by air from Viti Levu. The island is rugged, and untouched by heavy development, and the coast is surrounded by an extensive system of coral reefs. It is quite serene, even by Fijian standards. The most striking aspect of its largest town, Savusavu is the incredible beauty of Savusavu Bay, surrounded by sloping green hills dotted with hibiscus flowers. Hot springs are another defining feature of the area and are scattered liberally around the city limits. Though the area is perfectly safe, some visitors are surprised to see steam rise from the cracks in the sidewalks!

There is always lots of water sports to do on your Fiji vacation

Mamanuca Island Group

The Mamanuca group of islands is the most popular island area of Fiji. This volcanic archipelago consists of 20 islands, most of which are surrounded by crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and live corals. The gorgeous little South Sea Island is one of the treasures of the Mamanuca Islands. Coral reefs and thousands of colourful tropical fish inhabit the clear waters of the island - perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving. There are mostly 4-star and 5-star resorts to choose from, some of which are private islands. Some resorts are family oriented, while others cater exclusively to adults looking for a secluded or romantic getaway. These resorts are the perfect place for a honeymoon, destination wedding, or anniversary trip.

The Yasawa Island Group

Another group of islands is the Yasawa Islands which can be reached by seaplane or boat. The Yasawa Islands are very beautiful and renowned for Fiji’s best beaches. They are ideal for hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. For resort accommodation, consider the beautiful Yasawa Island Resort or Paradise Cove.

Fiji cruise

One of the best ways to explore several islands in the Mamanucas or Yasawas is on a Fiji cruise aboard Captain Cook Cruises or Blue Lagoon. These boutique, small-ship cruises offer itineraries ranging from 4 days up to a week, sailing to/from Denarau. Cruising is ideal for travellers who wish to be active. Activities off-ship include snorkeling, swimming, and local cultural encounters. There are also plenty of opportunities to relax on board, or on the beach.

Fiji People

Fiji wouldn’t be Fiji without the Fijian people. Most native Fijians still lead a life centred around their village. Community is very important to their culture and most wealth and resources are divided among the residents of a village. Even most resort staff go home to their villages in the evening after work. The Fijians are a big part of what makes these islands so enchanting. Establish eye contact for a second, and you will find yourself downing Kava, the local liquor, with the local chief and shouting “Bula!” meaning welcome. Fiji might just be the friendliest place in the world.

Fiji Cultural Experiences

There are also some great cultural experiences to be had on a Fiji vacation. Take a cruise up the Sigatoka River to the Fijian interior. On one tour, guests can not only travel by jet boat but also meet the local people and find out about typical village lifestyles. Another is a tour of the Nalesutale Highlands. Partake in the traditional Kava welcome ceremony, then visit the rainforest and cascading waterfalls, along with the Mountains of the Sleeping Giants. Nestled at the foot of these mountains is an ancestral village.
