Belize is a relatively small country located on the northeast coast of Central America. It is known for its diverse ecosystems which translate into amazing coral reefs, abundant wildlife and exotic marine life, all to be enjoyed on a Belize vacation. The country essentially consists of a coastline and savannah-type jungle. The north is fairly flat and swampy and the south is mountainous. The climate is tropical in nature with a dry season and a wet season. English is the official language here. A claim to fame for Belize is that chewing gum emanated from here from the gum of the Chicle tree!

When is the best time to visit Belize?

Belize offers a subtropical climate with high annual temperatures and humidity. These hot temperatures generally feel day and night and do not vary greatly between seasons.  The hottest time of year is from May to September and the cooler part of the year is from December to May (however, temperatures only drop around 4°C at this time of year). The wet season in the north is from mid-June to November and in the south it is from mid-May to November. If visiting the uplands of Belize, including Mountain Pine Ridge and the Maya Mountains range, temperatures tend to fall by about 3°C for every 304.8m (1,000 ft) rise in altitude.

Top cities and places to visit in Belize

Belize City

Located on the Caribbean coast are Belize City, the largest city and only urban area in the country. It was the former capital of Belize. Today, it is a melting pot of cultures and ethnic communities. Belize City is also a popular stop for cruise passengers en route to explore the country’s attractions. It offers handsome colonial architecture as well as excellent shopping, dining and beautiful seaside parks.

Cayo District

On a Belize vacation, certainly head inland as the country is known for its wildlife reserves and rainforests. The Cayo District is Belize's premier adventure and eco-activity region in the west of the country. It is covered with jungle and has an abundance of rivers, waterfalls and azure pools full of caves and some Mayan ruins. The Cayo District offers amazing nature from botanical gardens to primeval jungles and rainforests.

Maya Sites

One other attraction in Belize is its Mayan history which peaked between 250 and 900 AD and which it shares with its neighbouring countries. There are several sites which can easily be visited on Belize vacations, including Xunantunich located near the village of San Jose Succotz, Caracol found on the edge of the Maya mountains within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Lamanai situated on the banks of the New River Lagoon, and many more.

Belize Barrier Reef

The coastline, ringed by lagoons, boasts the second-largest coral reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. A visit to the Belize Barrier Reef proves excellent for swimming on beautiful beaches, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and other watersports. Also while on a Belize vacation, head inland as the country is known for its wildlife reserves and rainforests.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is the largest of several hundred islands located northeast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea. Only around 40 km (25 mi) long from north to south and about 1.6 km (1 mi) wide, the main form of transportation on Ambergris Caye is golf carts. The island’s main industry is eco-tourism which has become increasingly popular thanks to the Belize Barrier Reef. Hosting one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, it is renowned for its snorkelling and scuba diving sites available, making it one of the country's top tourist destinations on a trip to Belize.
