Tegucigalpa Vacation Packages
Often shortened to just Tegus, Tegucigalpa (along with its twin sister city Comayagüela) is the capital of Honduras. The country’s largest and most populous city, Tegus is found in the southern-central highland region of the country on a Honduras vacation.
The area was founded by Spanish settlers on an existing native settlement that was home to the Pech, Tolupans and Twahkas people. Tegus officially became a city in 1821 and in 1824, Tegus and Comayagüela were named as alternating capital cities. However, by 1898 it was decided that both cities would share the title of capital. The area became a mining town and experienced great population growth between 1930-1960 as migration from rural areas began. Despite being damaged by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, today, Tegus is a busy city that continues to grow.
The city’s location in a valley means that it is sheltered from the incredible heat experienced in places like San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba and Tegus, therefore, offers a comfortable climate. Being the capital, there are twenty-five foreign embassies and sixteen consulates located in Tegus. Despite its immense growth, the city still maintains a colonial feel at its centre and historical downtown area which hosts some great museums and churches on a Honduras vacation and is home to Honduras’ oldest cathedral.
