The Czech Republic is a small landlocked country situated south-east of Germany bordering Austria to the south, Poland to the north and Slovakia to the south-east. It is not a large country but has a rich and eventful history. From time immemorial, Czechs, Germans, Jews and Slovaks as well as Italian stonemasons, French tradesmen and deserters from Napoleon’s army have all lived and worked here all leaving their influence, all to be seen on a Czech Republic vacation.

It is thanks to their inventiveness and skill that this small country is graced with hundreds of ancient castles, monasteries and stately mansions, and even entire towns that give the impression of being comprehensive artefacts. The Czech Republic contains a vast amount of architectural treasure and has beautiful forests and mountains to match. On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The main language spoken is not only Czech. The Slovak language can also be heard, especially in big cities, as there is a sizable Slovak minority and both languages are mutually intelligible. Czech people are very proud of their language, and thus, even in Prague, you will not find many signs written in English (outside of the main tourist areas). Many older people, especially outside the large cities, are also unable to converse in English. However, most young people speak at least some English as it has been taught in most schools since 1990. Most Czechs speak a second and often a third language. English is the most widely known, especially among younger people.

The Czech language can be difficult for English speakers to grasp, as it is not an easy language to learn especially if you are not familiar with the other Slavic languages. The language has many local dialects, especially in Moravia. Some dialects are so different that they can be sometimes misunderstood even by a native Czech speaker from a different region. However, all Czech people understand the standard Czech (as spoken in TV, written in newspapers and taught in schools).

The Czech Republic is the country where modern beer (pivo in Czech) was invented (in Plzen). Czechs are the heaviest beer drinkers in the world and going to a cozy Czech pub for dinner and a few beers is a must on Czech Republic tours!  Czech lager is nothing like the fizzy lagers found in many other countries. Instead, it has a very strong, hoppy, almost bitter flavour and goes very well with heavy dishes like duck or pork and dumplings or strong cheese.

The capital of the Czech Republic is Prague with its incredible historic centre. This magical city of bridges, cathedrals, golden-domed towers and church domes is mirrored on the surface of the swan-filled Vltava River. Prague is also a modern and vibrant city full of energy, music, cultural art, fine dining and special events which can be enjoyed on Prague vacations. Cesky Krumlov is a beautiful city with a castle and a picturesque centre. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Like Prague, the town is situated on the Vltava River and is full of Baroque buildings. The town's appearance has hardly changed since the 18th century and the buildings have been well maintained and restored.

Kutna Hora was a silver mining town in medieval times and once the second Czech city to Prague in terms of population. Although Kutna Hora has some comparatively drab modern architecture, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. The town is home to restored older architecture with many Medieval, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings which can be viewed on Czech Republic tours.

Karlovy Vary, meaning "Charles' Bath" was named after Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor who founded the city in 1370. It is famous for its hot springs and its colourful and whimsical architecture. Olomouc has the second largest and second oldest historic preservation zone in the country. It is situated on the Moravia River and was the capital of Moravia until 1641 and is the sixth largest city in the country.

Brno is the major city of Moravia (a historical region). It is the largest city in Moravia and the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It represents the administrative centre of the South Moravia region and is located in a beautiful natural environment between the South Moravian vineyards and the Moravian Karst.
