Best places to visit in Cotswolds

Broadway

Broadway is one of the most picturesque villages with a selection of antique and quality shops. It has been called “The Jewel of the Cotswolds” with buildings dating back to the 16th Century in various styles – Tudor, Stuart, and Georgian. It has one of the longest High Streets in England.

Moreton-in-Marsh

Moreton-in-Marsh is a lively market town dating back to the Saxon era with elegant 17th and 18th Century buildings. Be sure to take in the open-air street market on Tuesdays. One highlight here is Chastleton House, one of England’s most outstanding Jacobean houses. It has a superb collection of furniture and textiles, some dating back to the 17th Century. The gardens are also worth seeing. 

Stow-on-the-Wold

Another is Stow-on-the-Wold, well known as a centre for antiques. Situated on the Roman Fosse Way, it dates from being a prehistoric fortified settlement. The Market Square is large and impressive and is surrounded by houses, shops, and inns all built in the local Cotswold stone. 

Chipping Campden 

Chipping Campden is one of the best-preserved and most historically important towns in the Cotswolds. The High Street is home to a number of interesting shops. The Hidcote Manor Gardens are exceptionally attractive with displays of unusual plants. Two unusual events take place here that is worth catching on your England tour. One is the annual Olimpick Games usually in May which have been taking place since 1612 and are based on International games of the same name (though they predate the modern version by almost 300 years!). The other is the Campden Music Festival which takes place in May each year featuring primarily classical music. 

Bourton-on-the-Water

Bourton-on-the-Water is regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England, with a wealth of attractions and shops, restaurants, and tea rooms. Or simply enjoy some tranquil time by the River Windrush with its beautiful bridges. This is probably the most popular village in the region and is often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds.” It contains a model village which is a replica of Bourton-on-the-Water itself. Nearby is Birdland Park with over 500 species of birds.

How to get to the Cotswolds

You can take a train from London’s Paddington Station to Moreton-in-the Marsh. However, renting a car is the most ideal way to explore the Cotswolds on an England vacation.
