Yorkshire can boast some of the most magnificent scenery in England when combining both the moorlands and the dales. The region consists of interesting market towns, picturesque villages, stately homes and ancient abbeys as well as sweeping landscapes which include panoramic views of the countryside from dales (deep valleys) to high moor. The countryside is full of meandering roads lined with dry stone walls and patchworks of meadows.
North Yorkshire Moors
The North York Moors offer wild countryside where sheep wander and around each corner are pretty villages such as Hutton le Hole, Thornton, and Goathland. The nearby rugged coastline was once the haunt of smugglers. You can investigate quaint fishing villages such as Runswick Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay, and Staithes.
The principal towns to consider include Helmsley, a picturesque market town on the banks of the River Rye with a medieval castle, market square, and market day on Fridays. It is the gateway to some wonderful dales and moorland walks. Nearby is Rievaulx Abbey founded in the 12th Century. Malton is another to consider, known as “Yorkshire’s Food Capital” with its annual Malton Food Lovers Festival in May. Its monthly Food Market with cooking demonstrations, live music, a growing number of artisan producers, and places to eat and drink. Nearby is Rosedale Abbey, a small Cistercian nunnery; and Scampston Hall, an attractive Regency country house with a collection of art, furniture, and porcelain. Once again, Malton is also a good starting point for walks.
Yorkshire Dales
The Yorkshire Dales are softer but still very scenic. They contain many delightful towns and villages. You can explore by car, or on foot, perhaps stopping at one of the typical Yorkshire pubs for a drink or lunch. The Dales spread to the north from the market and spa towns of Settle, Skipton, Ilkley, and Harrogate; in North Yorkshire, to the southern boundary in Wharfedale and Airedale. The characteristic scenery of the Dales is green upland pastures with grazing sheep and cattle separated by dry-stone walls.
The principal towns include Hawes which hosts a market day on Tuesdays. Traditional shops, cafes, and pubs now cater to a variety of visitors as well as the local community. The Dales Countryside Museum has an old steam engine standing on what was once the Wensleydale Railway and is home to a magnificent collection of historic Dales artifacts. Leyburn is another market town just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park and an excellent base for exploring the area on great walks. Ingleton lies in the foothills of Yorkshire’s famous Three Peaks. Nearby are spectacular waterfalls, deep caves, and important geological and archaeological sites. Long and short scenic walks can be taken from here.
